Scariest Civ Moment...

My last two games have shown me that I couldn't win without Pyramids playing :king:!

In both games I started building this Wonder but the message that someone have finished it before me  makes me upset :( ! In my games who builds Pyramids he rules :egypt:

oh yes - back in 1991 or so i was doing one of my 1st games at "prince" level.

i was babylonian faught the germans
after that i took the french - some mongol and russian cities, too.

after that i moved into africa/egypt and they couldn't resist.

suddenly thebes (or heliopolis) did "see" the ZULUS.
they were equiped with chariot & chivalry and caused endless trouble.

1st they routed all egyptian cities so i had to fight them / "hold them back" between nile delta to israel / babylon area

everything i did was useless: they came with more and more chariots and chivalry -
i build at least 20 cities additional at ukraine area to stop them,
tried every trick possible - the game was lost (at last)

i just could move to a polar square build there a small village and look at the "erase" of my little empire.

after that i took a look at the game saved before that happened and tried other tricks til i "got into africa" and raid THEM.

i learned much out of this game.

I once conquered most of the world on the Earth Map as the Romans, and was fighting the French. The French were fighting good so I took most of my army, and transported them to France.
I left most of my cities undefended, and the French didn't have a chance. Than, all over the seas, Barbarian ships came and started taking my cities. I tried to fly some Bombers and Fighters To recapture but they ran out of fuel. And by the time I had reached my cities, The Barbarians were already strong, and I had only a few left. The French were'nt much help either...:die:

Another Time, I was the Romans on Emperor level, and I did'nt pay much attention to my defences until a lone Mongol Cavalry apeared...

I was playing a game on emperor level.

Fast expanding, and killing every civ as fast as possible (earth map)..

Three Knights heading for my Capital that was still defended by one Phallanx without citywalls.. That was a stupid mistake,,

Heh. The last time I played I was alone on the American continent, living up the good life and rolling in the dough. I had just built a city between the two continents for my ships to be able to go from one sea to the next, and before I could sufficiently arm it, I have a plane fly over and see a wave of tanks, diplomats to ruin me and take tech, and a carrier probably full of planes. Just to see what happened, I let nature take its course and see what the attacking Germans did. They made my country revolt and eventually stole 2000 monies for taking the city. Needless to say, my only option was to go back a year (it was two years after a save) and nuke the area around the poor city.

I remember once playing, and having a decent game on emperor level. I had conquered my continent and was quickly developing - I think I may have just discovered gunpowder or a similar aged tech - when and Indian cruiser showed up of my coast. I just thought "uh-oh".

My scariest moment was when I joined a war between the Greeks and the Russians, both neighboring me.
Since the war was in modern age all of us had nukes, and, well, all of us used them. Turn after turn the Russians sent waves of nukes, themselves being hit by Greek nukes and mine.
This is up to today the most full scale nuclear war I ever encountered in a Civ game.

The really scary part was the aftermath, because due to all the pollution, about every two or three turns a global warming occured, turning all of my beautiful grassland into desert. And I didn't have enough settlers to clean up the tiles so fast! Food production declined, my people died from hunger, money revenue declined, I couldn't support the infrastructure of my cities, and so on.
It all happend so fast that I really feared the game could end in a nuclear winter scenario, because we destroyed the planet. We didn't, but my final score hit the bottom due to all the pollution ...

Another scary part was when my then-beloved obviously went out of bed and caught me playing Civ in the middle of the night, asking: "Are you still playing?"
Boy, this situation is really scary!

Not as bad as a phalanx eating 4 paratroopers for lunch (playing civ II in roman campaign,(sorry couldn`t resist posting on the civ I forum)

My scariest moment #1:

First game ever and I had 2 cities, each with three militia (I had no idea then), then the evil Mongols came with about 8 chariots ... never forgot how good they can be after that ...
(funnily enough, my fist game of civ3, I was killed by a horseman stack)

#2
Finally learnt how to play the game. Had taken over most of the world and the Egyptians had one last city. I come over with Cannons and Knights and get ready for the showdown. Kill their three phalanx and march in. I sit back smugly and watch the marhcing soldiers animation ... they finish ... waiting to win ... but the game hasn't finished! ARGH! I've got the whole world, but somewhere, using an invisibility cloak must be another city. Where? where?

Never found it ... what a nightmare!

I am always on the edge of my seat early in the game when I have only 3 or four cities and half are undefended and then along comes an enemy militia. Arrgh - start again.

P.S. I have also had the invisible something left at the end of the game stopping me from claiming the victory that is rightfully mine.

(gotta getta picture)

That is a truly evil bug in civ1. It happens when a respawned civ is destroyed before it builds its first city. If you ever see a lonely settler belonging to a recently respawned civ: Don’t kill it! Apparently killing the settler doesn’t count as destroying the civ, but as the civ cease to exist it is becomes impossible to destroy it later. Then it will also be impossible to win a conquest victory:eek:. Wait till the settler builds a city, then it is safe to destroy it. Sometimes the AI kills such respawned settlers though. I don’t think there is anything you can do to prevent that:(.

My scariest moment ever was the first time I ever played any version of Civ, and it happened to be 1 on my Nintendo. My spaceship had almost reached Alpha Centauri when the Mongols nuked my capitol city and landed cavalry from a transport right beside it, sacking the city.

Several turns later, I was able to retaliate with a few of my own nukes, but many many more flew back towards me...

The SNES version is the best!

My scariest Civ moments would always be while playing either Germany, France or Greece when the game included the Mongols. I would start playing comfortably, hoping that the Russians / Chinese would be able to go back and forth with the Mongols. Usually though, the Mongols would win. If they did win, then I knew it was time to build a settler and a Trireme and head for a new land because I was as good as dead. There is just no way to beat them in the SNES version because they multiply faster than you can kill them. Well... I guess I could probably kill them if I REALLY, REALLY tried, but it sure isn't easy, and the time and resources it would take would put you way behind in the science race..

I've never considered that an important wonder in Civ1, because it doesn't take much to get into Republic anyway. It would be good if you want to research more war stuff first and then go into republic via the pyramids.

Perhaps at higher levels you should try to not play a science game. At the two highest levels the AI is so fierce that I just research diplomats, sails and knights and then cut off research all together. With these three units you can conquer the world quite easily. Oh yeah: expand like rabbits, that's quite important too. :D

I agree with you here.
I've never build the pyramids...

MicroProse offered a free download that fixes this.
It is still on the apolyton civilization site.

http://apolyton.net/civ1/files/updates/civv05.zip

It is the version 5 of CIV I game file CIV.EXE dated 10/13/1992.
If your EXE has an earlier date you should get this one.
If you destroy a lone settler you still don't get credit for destroying the Civ, some sort of message indication that the Barbarians destroyed it comes up but you don't end up looking for a lost civ that doesn't exists at the end of the game.

 My scariest moment was when I played the earth and conquered Europe/Asia/Africa and as always was going over to kick Aztec.
I built 2 transport and filled them with good troops. I had 1 battle shipp guarding the convoy.. but above Iceland.. a Aztec Cruiser came and sank both my transport!!!!!
