Scariest Civ Moment...

My scariest moment came back in 1994. I'd been in the navy for several years, and aboard my aircraft carrier for 4 years. I'd been addicted to Civ for 3 years that I can remember. We were out at sea and I played an entire game of Civ straight through, no interruptions. It took me about 20 hours. I laughed at myself for doing so, but no big deal, I thought.

Then I sat down and gave myself a rough estimate of how many games I had played at that point. A decent estimate was 200 games, beginning to end. This works out to 4,000 hours.

Working 40 hour weeks over 50 weeks a year (everyone takes at least a little vacation), works out to be 2,000 hours a year that the average person works.

Having played a game for 4,000 hours over the previous 3 years was absolutely shocking to me. Sure, a lot of that time I'd been at sea, floating on the water, with not much to do. But had I been studying, I could have finished my degree, gotten an officer's commission, learned German, etc. etc. etc.

That was a scary moment.

So I'm a kid. The game came out when I was 5. I didn't really play it until 1996. I didn't know how to play. I had 1 city and a cavalry unit running around and I got beaten by Barbarians. I played at a friend's house since I didn't have the game. Finally, I played on my comp in like 2000 or something. I mean this was the time I was also an Unreal Tournament player and I started CS. Yet, whenever I played with my ancient 90mhz computer I could only play Civ1.

I played Roman, and I finished conquering the Americans with my chariots. I was like yeaaaaa take that. I had like 12 cities or so. I didn't know about irrgation or roads. I didn't know the tech tree. I didn't know jack. I moved my sail with chariots and phalanxes onto a new island. The French greeted me. I built a city wtih a lone settler and I fortified up. Suddenly I got hit by Armor, Bombers, Riflemen. I had friggn PHALANXES defending. Somehow, I held out with friggn foot soldiers against modern weaponary. It was pretty scary. I didn't know there was such tech in the game =P

My first civ game all i had was a horde (yes a HORDE, mabye up to a hundred or more) of militia. all of a sudden tanks appeared out of nowhere. luckily i was able to defeat them, but more came.... and more.... and more.... and my brave warriors had no chance. also have you ever noticed that whether in real world or random map, the aztecs always seem to get very advanced?
Also, Ive never seen other civs use nukes in civ1. that would be scary, if they got advanced enough (which they dont do anymore very often, mwahaha i either squish them or get riflemen in the bcs....)

Ooh also something else interesting, i once conquered the entire world (real world) with a single chariot. how wierd is that? (plus the computers had phalanx and city walls)

 That's pretty funny. Was the difficuly chieftain? Imagine a chariot traveling around the world for thousands of years, killing everything.

An army of chariots.

Do you really think that it takes a nation dozens of years to produce just one chariot? And that epic wars are fought with just one or two soldiers on each side? Of course not! The icons represent huge armies thousands strong. Likewise, the Diplomat unit would represent a small group of officals.
Of course, it's up to your imagination. If you believe that it's just one chariot... well, good for you!
But I like to think that the battles involve many soldiers bravely fighting to the end.

But that's just me.

He said a single chariot. It's pretty funny thinking one chariot took over the world... lol! I like to see the icons as cohorts of an army.

Actually, the difficulty was prince (thats what i usually do, but im going to try king soon) and there were 7 civs, and lotsa barbarians.
and yes it was fun! mabye ill try it again...

My scariest moment was in one of my first succesfull game, at cheftain difficulty level, I manage to get most advanced than any other civs, I was in democracy since very early (thanks to the pyramids), and it was the first time I reached modern era. I didn't know very well how to manage unhappiness yet.

I built a nuclear plant in one of my best cities, and then the city went into revolt. The next turn, my city exploded in a nuclear accident, the mushroom cloud animation and the sound was terriffying since i didn't know about nukes yet ! And in the same turn my democraty was deposed down to anarchy !

That's also why I wasn't so much impressed by my first nuclear war...

It was years ago... and I mean actual years, not turns.

My Battleship attacked a warrior in a hill... goodbye Battleship! :aargh:

Scary or fustrating?

my worst civ 1 experience was when i had so many nukes that i just went and launched them all. When some notice came up about global warming and pollution?

All of my towns turned into swamps and my empire starved to death...

now thats BAD KARMA

Ouch. Did you win the game anway?

Okay, let me set up the mood of my scariest moment: I was younger and it was one of my first games of civ, I felt I was doing pretty well, I thought. I had met most other civs I think, it was fairly late in the game. I kept peace with all of my neighbors, and so I never felt it important to upgrade those phalanxes (sp?). Well, I was a very peaceful player that was content to build up my nation and avoid war at all costs. Well those (insert choice words here) Russians attacked me! They did a sneak attack on me! I still remember that evil smirk of Stalin. Of course, I have since learned the importance of war in Civilization, and I still enjoy wiping the Russians of the face of the earth. Revenge for that betrayal all those years ago. I was so innocent and trusting. In that one, traitorous instant, I lost my childhood innocence. It woke me to the cold reality of life. Every Russian Civ has paid for that in the electrons of their bits, as they dissapear from my history. Yes, I tend to hold grudges for a while ;)

Tehe.. reminds me of my relation with the Aztecs when I first started playing civ..

I met the Aztecs who made me believe that war is not the way to win and science will prevail over bloodshed. Then they sneak-attacked me.
Oh how I despised those Aztecs.. So I spent many a night attempting to wipe them out.. when I finally did I realized that the game was actually quite good and, in fact, worth basing my life around.

Back in the high school days ('90-'94) I would be attacked by either Mongolian Battleships or Armors but later on I would get nuked. I think they are the most aggressive civilization.

Indeed. Mongolian Armors are the fierced unit in the battlefield. Even more then my folks when they find me dominating the world at 3 in the morning :P
