Hi! I've never posted to this forum before, but John Valdez suggested I do so after he and I exchanged e-mails on a subject that had been frustrating me a great deal: the fact that the game sometimes puts a unit icon in the upper left hand corner of the scen.txt box, and sometimes does not. By careful examination of the existing scenarios I think we worked out exactly how to control or eliminate these images. Since I wasn't able to find this discussed elsewhere on the Internet, I thought it might make a useful post for other scenario designers to read.
As far as I can tell, the game places a unit icon in the scen.txt box if the civ that moves first is designated the protagonist in the scenario; it doesn't matter for this purpose whether the scenario is objective-based or not (see the Apocalypse scenario in CinC for an example of this). The exact image that appears is that of the unit that moves first in the scenario (not, as I first thought, the most abundant unit the protagonist possesses). If you DON'T want an image, the civ that moves first must not be designated the protagonist (see Jihad in CinC for an example). If you DO want an image, the protagonist must move first in the scenario (see the Civil War in CinC for an example). I hope that this explanation is sufficiently clear.
Perhaps this will help someone. The explanation may be common knowledge for all I know, but I couldn't find the answer anywhere and it was driving me crazy. Most of the credit should go to John Valdez for putting me on the right track. Thanks!
Benjamin Ball
