Hello Everyone,

Since the release of the latest patch, I've been busy working on a WWII scenario for Civ3. It's been tricky, especially with the limitations of the editor, but I believe it can be done in a way that is fun and historically accurate.

I am uploading the first beta of this scenario. It is done and fully playable (and quite fun!) from the Allied side. I would like feedback from players before making any further changes. Please note: this is a BETA and things will change. I fully expect to make many additions along the way with your help. I would be very interested to work with any individuals who would like to contribute to the effort.

Please post your feedback and criticism, good or bad. Scenario details are posted below.

Mike DelPrete’s World War II Scenario - Beta

Summary

Take command of the Allied forces across Europe and the Pacific at the height of World War II. With the Germans at the gates of Moscow and Japan threatening British India, only solid strategic thinking on your part can save the free world.

Scenario Notes

This scenario has been designed with playability in mind. Therefore, several concessions have been made:

1) The planet is not entirely colonized. Only major cities of strategic importance are included. While including every major city was possible, the micromanagement involved would have been prohibitive to gameplay and balance.

2) Neutral nations have been omitted for this release. Adding additional nations multiplies game balance issues, and brings up diplomatic concerns, so thorough testing is going to be required.

3) All nations involved in the conflict have been lumped into the Axis and Allied powers. This was necessary due to the diplomatic limitations of the current editor.

4) The game must be played from a saved game, not as a scenario.

5) For this beta release, only the Allied powers are playable. After further testing, the Axis powers will be playable as well.

Rules Changes

* Changed attributes of some early wonders to function as a Forbidden Palace. These wonders have been placed in capital cities to combat corruption as a local seat of government.

* Research times have been dramatically increased. This reflects the longer scope of the war and puts more emphasis on choosing a specific direction.

* “We love the King” days have been disabled.

* Settlers have been disabled.

Credits

This scenario is based off Kal-El’s world map.

Oops! No units have been added for this scenario. "Superscout" was an artifact left over from testing.

I've uploaded a new version that removed that. My apologies.

It looks really good, and it`s fun to play. The axis gave me a real hard fight too. Though they are small, I have some things I noticed:

1. Resources. There is no oil neither in Caucasus nor Romania. The German attack eastwards in 1941 was about securing oilsupplies. I didn`t look where the axis had it`s oil, but it should be in Romania.

2. As I played, Tanks were produced in America and sent from airports to London and Plymouth (later Antwerp and Paris), while none were produced in USSR. I think you should rename Omsk to Chelyabinsk, put iron and coal source in it`s city square and give it the ironworks. This because of Chelyabinsk importance during the war. The city became known as Tankograd because it produced large (nearly all) numbers of T-34 and Katyusha. In USSR I could only defend (though I took a coupple of cities early), while my progress was in North Africa and France. USSR should be able to produce tanks from the beginning.

3. You have written Narvik in Norway wrong. (I didn`t say I noticed important bugs)

This scenario can be great. I miss WW2 units and its own tech tree. The civilopedia can also be changed accordingly. But so far I`m impressed......

If you need help with the civilopedia later on, I would love to help...

Thanks for your comments, Athelstane! For the next version I'm going to make some of the changes you've suggested. There is now oil located in Romania and in the Caucasus. I've also made your suggested changes to Omsk/Chelyabinsk (very good suggestion, thank you!).

As for unique units, technologies, and the civilopedia, those are things I would like to look at in the future. I don't believe in making overly complex scenarios since I don't want the player to get bogged down in any administrative hassles. I think the fun part of this scenario is the ability to jump in and fight.

But yes, I would like to add them in the future. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated!

Mike

I forgot one thing. Units shouldn`t be able to move between airports. I don`t think it`s realistic in a WW2 -scenario. Half the work is to get the supplies past the German submarines.
