The people have decide to pursue the path to Philosophy, so we have a tech goal. But we all know we don't always get to research what we want, so this thread is to discuss what techs we want to pick up if those in the Philosophy path are unavailable. We'll sort them by the number of votes to create a priority list for the alternative techs, and update periodically.

EDIT: forgot to include: Currency makes available Marketplaces; Trade makes available Caravans and Marco Polo's Embassy

Is it too early in the game to be looking at researching Triremes?

We're on an island, a some point we're going to need somewhere nice overseas to on holiday too.

I thought I voted for Trade in the last poll, but anyway...

Trade, and if can't then Writing then Philosophy. There are so many uses for Trade. And Diplomats.

Trade is my first choice. So we can try to finish wonders. Then Writing, then Hanging Gardens. I'm sure we can fit Philosphy in there somehow...

Trade would be my first choice as well, Philosophy is our current research aim any way so it makes sense to research trade if we cannot research a Philosophy tech. If none of these techs are available then I would like to see us research map making because I have a feeling we may be on our own on this landmass.

When we've got trade will we switch wonder production in RC to Marco Polo's?
That's something else to keep in mind, we've got two cities building Colossus and we want Elysium to finish it first so before RC finishes it we must switch it to something else!

I am in favor of growth as fast as possible. Not just population, but also city capability. This means (a) 3 trade routes with Colossus city, (b) happiness boosters (like Hanging Gardens, Mike's Chapel, etc), and (c) settlers for roads & irrigation. These are essential to allow transition to Republic/Democracy as early as possible and gain an insuperable lead in science.

Other than Marco Polo's, trade will only be truly useful when cities can afford to build caravans and not be distracted by building military units. I prefer the minimum of military units necessary for defense because in Republic they are irrelevant for happiness and consume shield support.

Since we are at Deity level, I would like to hear some discussion about the value of Pottery for Hanging Gardens (not for granaries).

I'm not so interested in the Pyramids. They are good for fast population increase, but if our "happiness infrastructure" isn't devleloped, we'll end up with lots of entertainers. Besides, with developed trade routes and Republic, we can increase population fast with "We love the Consul" anyway.

The bottom line: Trade and Pottery for HG if desired.

Well, I can't imagine living without the Hanging Gardens. People are so excited about the Colossus, I've simply kept mum. The last Gotm, I finished without Railroad because HG is so wonderful.

Which brings me to a question about cities. Many citizens seem concerned to start this city, or that city, so it can begin growing. Once we become Republic, we can make any city grow --- it won't really matter which one was built first. Hanging Gardens productivity is the way to get there, seems to me... But first, Writing and Trade.

I'm not concerned about starting cities so that they can grow - I'm concerned with starting cities so that they can grow to size 2 and get us even more cities! We will need to celebrate Elysium up so that we get the most out of the SSC but the others shouldn't be worried about too much for the time being. Once we have fully colonised our continent then we can start to think about celebrating up because it will be far more worthwhile if we can do it with a load of cities than with just a few. So we want the SSC to be big, with the Colossus and some trade routes that will "mature" after celebration, RC to have the Hanging Gardens and all the other cities to pump out settlers and caravans later on until the island is full of NUF cities. Then we can move to the medieval age and start celebrating! :goodjob:

At 2650BC: Discoveries in 10 turns, Code of Laws 23 of 60, so another 6.1 turns. Regia Civitas Colossus in 37 turns. Both will come faster, but it is still a tricky business. Not sure.

btw, why not build Colossus AND The Gardens in the SSC? Maybe something else in RC, Marco Polo? LightHouse? Not sure.

Trouble is, RC should build what the AI might build first...

I think we're going through the techs quite fast (considering we're on deity) and we're also doing good work in wonder-building so I think we can have both tech and wonders now. :)

Thus far having Currency then Trade as our alternate techs is handily leading the only other choice voted for, Map Making, so unless this poll wildly swings some other direction in the very near future, our alternative tech choices, should our primary goal be unavailable, shall be as follows:

Currency
Trade
Map Making

Trade has picked up a bit after founding Reneaux: 7 turns per tech now. Still we will need quite some turns to finish all techs we want to research for philosophy and these 3 techs.
