We are currently researching Alphabet, to be followed by Code of Laws and then Monarchy. Our current discovery rate is every 6 turns. We are about half way to Alphabet, so another 3 or 4 turns will have us there. If we maintain our current discovery rate, we have a minimum of about 20 turns before we really need to decide what to research next. Given that techs from huts may change our situation before then, I'd like not to talk so much about specific tech paths as poll the general direction we want our science to go, and we'll sort out the specific techs as we get closer. So vote for the category you'd like our science to focus on once past Monarchy, and be sure to post your reasons

Surely we need to have a mixture of all the wonders, whilst aiming to have the major wonders like Mich's chapel and Leo's.

A mixture eventually, yes, but folks may want to focus in a particular direction immediately.

For instance, my preference would be to go straight for Philosophy, as it will give us a free tech if we get there first and it opens doors to many other techs I always try to focus on. Someone else may want more of a war focus to our research, however, or something different. Hence the poll

It seems decided, then ;-)

Seriously: We will have enough opportunities for building wonders even if we follow a straight route to, let's say, Philosophy. We will have to research Writing, Literacy and Mysticism, which will allow for 2 wonders. The only problem we can encounter is if we get the message "(Somebody) has almost completed (Something)" for which we lack the necessary advance. I don't see a solution to that at the moment.

But as someone mentioned before, the President should keep record of all messages that tell us of wonders being started. (Do we always get a message?)

Mich's, Philosophy or Science are fine, but we need Diplomats ASAP, and Trade as well. I may eventually vote for Trade, believing Writing is our first choice. If we get a choice between Writing and Trade (or a prerequisite), that's a tough call.

Gary, Writing is also in the path to get Philosophy, IIRC.

BTW for everyone, multiple votes is turned on, so if you want a balanced approach for two or more areas, you can vote more than once :)

No messages of that kind so far.

Ainwood has a good point, regarding Map and War research, and Trade. And in the Diplomacy thread, our President has spoken!

Since I could vote again, I'm voting for Trade. You guys are thinking of building a Wonder in half our cities!

Leowind, does IIRC mean "If you would just study the Documentation"? I can't figure it out. Does ICS mean Infinite City Sites, many close packed cities? BTW = By The Way, eh?

Gary, IIRC stands for "If I Recall Correctly"

I'm entirely unsure as to which techs "science" refers to, but hey! :)
I hedged my bets, by voting for both trade and philosophy. I like to have the SSC up and running as soon as possible and the caravans prove vital in beating the AI to early wonders. I'm not sure if there were any messages about wonder construction in the last president's term, but have a strange idea about the Persians and the Pyramids. The Persians may not even be playing, but interfere with my strange ideas at your peril! ;)

Rather than deciding which type of tech we want to research next, we probably want to decide which is our next major goal, like we did with monarchy. I suggest following the path to invention to get King Richards and Leonardo Di Caprio's (;) ) workshop

Don't forget Pottery=Hanging Gardens. With Republic a very potent 'weapon' indeed!

I'm all for a big tech lead, so I voted for Trade and Philosophy (and Happiness via HG)

I say that we should take Monotheism as our research target because Mike's Chapel is vital for better governments and the tech path includes philosophy. We can also pick up Astronomy for Copernicus' Observatory - another very important wonder. :)
Once we have the Chapel then we can change government to democracy or republic far more easily and that will double the rate of tech research. :goodjob:

Lots of good ideas here. This discussion mixes long range goals with short term ones. Mike's Chapel , Yes!

This is a deity game, I believe. I've played with Hanging Gardens #1 for years, and am glad someone mentioned them.

Our President might like the Elephants, since they are 4-1-2 like the awesome Chariots of Civ1. Horse is a prerequisite.

Crusaders are better, yes. But we will have both Philosophy and Elephants before we get to Monotheism.

Summary: We have Bronze and CB Burial. We are currently researching Alphabet, to be followed by Code of Laws and then Monarchy. I say Monarchy, Currency, Trade, and Writing. Unless war comes up and causes us to replan - and 40 turns is a long time for nothing to come up! a dozen centuries! We'll all be dead.

How DO I vote twice? When I view this thread it tells me "You have already voted on this poll." and there is no option to vote again.

Does "multiple vote turned on" mean you can vote for as many items you want in ONE instance of voting?

If that precludes me from getting my second favourite besides Philosophy in, I hereby include Trade manually.

You have to tick several boxes and then press the vote button, once you have voted though you cannot vote anymore so you can no longer vote.

Helio, I've noted your desire to add a vote to Trade and will keep that in mind. :)

I'm pleased to see all the great discussion here. At the conclusion of this poll/discussion, I'll take a look at the top picks and begin suggesting some actual tech choices/specific goals we can start wrangling about. It will be quite some time before we actually have to implement our choices, but I would like to have a specific goal in mind, with the tech route to get to it, and 1 or 2 alternative techs if none of our primary choices are available, all ready before we get to that point. In the meantime keep the discussion going :D
