In short: Iron working is learned short. After that we'll go for Alphabet, as decide in This Poll.
Alphabet is also obtainable through trade.

What to research after alphabet. And please mention the 2 techs you want. Bee-lining seems to be desired by (some) citizens, so I'll build that option into the discussion.

Tech tree:

Possible techs (after Iron Working and Alphabet)

Masonry -> Which allows Mathematics
Writing -> Which allows Philosophy, Code of Laws, Literature and Map Making
Horseback Riding.
Mysticism -> Which allows Polytheism.

The Science Department advises to go this way:

Honorable Minister Rik

From my humble perspective, we need to go on with mysticism, polytheism and monarchy, ideally, pending on the trade minister, the acquisition of mysticism by trade will enable us to research polytheism and monarchy. Please make this connection clear.
We should also conclude iron working AND the next technology for the next turnchat, as we now are 5 turns more behond than before, down to minus 9. I sincerely hopes that the trade miinistry forecasts all eventualities and develop policies on them, as we now get a clearer picture of what techs are out there. I will be present next turnchat in order to assure we keep pace with the progression of the game many people wants.

Provolution,

With all due respect, there is no -9 deficit. No term has ever gone to 100 turns and I don't feel we should start that practice now.

This game is about decisions made along the way, and don't feel we should bypass key discussion points. That said, we may still need to stop at Iron Working.

Lastly, I don't know why the chat was stopped at 5 turns for a cash trade. It's not like both would have not still been there in 5 more turns. The Trade Ministry will not take the blame for a slight delay of the game.

Sit back and enjoy, Provolution. These games take about 5-6 months to complete. You are trying to push us forward to a game that would end in 3.

Considering the number of our neighbours Monarchy is the right goverment.
We could now trade for mysticism and go for Polytheism. Polytheism has great trade value so that leads trading for Writing and if we want we can get Literature or go for Monarchy.
I vote now trade for Mysticism and researching Polytheism :crazyeye:

I'm poping in here for two reasons. To nodd my head in agreement with Rik and to do the same with DZ.
Provo- this game takes a long time to get done. We have never finished in less than 5 months, and thats with everything going right. Secondly, you keep asking us to play this like we were playing a life-or-death tournament game. We're just trying to have some fun (and not kill eachother in the process). Third- Trade can't predict what techs a civ is going to go for. Neither can science. Nor does domestic have the time to analyize the output of a potential city site (thats what we have CT for :) )(ps- i keed, i keed)

Lets just have some fun. I'm sorry if this sounds like a rehash of DZs post, but I just had to type it.

SaaM

Actually, I think a civ's traits indicates what techs they might go for, well I think but I'm not sure.

What ever happened to researching Masonry after Iron Working? Don't we need to get that if we hope to build the Pyramids? or are we relying on trade to get that?

It was voted off.

Oh?
Coulda sworn it was our first choice.. didn't see it being overruled...

Edit: I see the poll where Alphabet is to come after Iron (darn it I missed that poll). But, we've got to keep in mind if we're to go after the Pyramids we need to get Masonry early.

My vote goes for Writing, it has a good trade value and the AI's normally don't go straight up that path. THe quickest route to lit right now is the best choice.

So if we are going to devote our precious time/money to aquire Alphabet after IW, I find it silly we then plan to not put it to use and follow a different path. We should follow through with what we're doing by studying writing then literature.

Writing can strongly improve our foreign relations, and Literiture will boost our science income.

And Monarchy will make us a better nation, being more versatile, expanding quicker, thus allowing better research. We need to stay on the Monarchy path we all voted to be on. We need a new form of government now, not after some walk down a rosey path that will lead to a failed wonder.

My vote is for Mysticism.

Lets then vote to buy mysticism because we can buy it and trade for worker and gold. And then polytheism.

Well, I think we need to make sure we at least trade for Masonry... we can't build the Pyramids without it.

I think it's a tough call - we need monarchy with the number of civs we have around us, but we also need literature (via writing) so we can build libraries, both for scientific and cultural reasons.

I think we should research Writing then Literature, then hopefully trade for Mysticism and maybe Polytheism, then research Monarchy, but I wouldn't mind too much if we went the other way around.

If we do get to Writing it definitely opens up our options, giving us 4 techs to choose from. We would just need to research the least popular tech if that could be determined(Code of Laws?). Doing this should enable us to get involved in more trades.

However, I am still intrigued by Monarchy.

Oh, well. We are set for the next 14 or so turns, it seems, so let's see how this plays out.

Well, ladies and gentlemen, there are differing modes of what is, and what is not entertaining in this demogame, and I can guarantee you that many of this singular decision pitstops delaying us for a week is not exactly promoting/recruiting peoples interest in the game. I see something like 10-15 posts on the average these days, after the useless break we took (I even agreed with DZ that the break was not needed).
So please do not consider my interest in a paced game of a stable progression based on sound planning and coordination around milestones. That you belittle my posistion, SAAM in particular here, as being over-zealous, competitive, "Killing" (I see hard exchanges going on most of the time, not me being part of it)) and in general being too interested in a paced progression I do not really agree on. Well, what can I tell you, you will see that your Fraggle Mountain idealism will dilute peoples interest, as we stop over one small spot vote, and put some people off. I am not saying we are going to work here full time, but maybe cover some 20 turns per week on the average, if the ministers and DP play ball, and manage to close out some veto-yelling.

I have to be direct about this, as I know many that is tired of this. If you decide to pidgeonhole me singularly in order to put an end to this for you "un-fun" criticism of these flawed practices, that is fair enough, but less vocal people think as I do...
