You know when you move you science slider around, and you can change between like 60 and 100% and the number of turns before you next discovery stays the same... If just leave the slider higher and take a hit on the money will you next discovery come quicker?
Very likely you are moving the slider around very early in the game, when your income is so low that moving the slider does not make much difference. Once you build a few more cities (and your trade increases accordingly) you will start to notice a real difference when you move the slider around...
Research in Civ III works as follows: each tech has a certain "cost" in beakers (higher for more advanced techs, and influenced by the number of other civilizations which already know it, IIRC). The Science slider determines what percentage of your trade income is put into beakers (the rest going into gold and luxuries, according to how you set the luxuries slider). Say you are making 100 trade a turn. If you set your science slider to 50% and your luxury slider to 0%, 50% of your trade will go into science and 50% into gold. So, you will put 50 beakers a turn into research, and earn 50 gold a turn. Assuming everything stays constant (you do not move the sliders, and your trade income does not change), you will research a tech with a cost of, say, 250 beakers in 5 turns.
a trick i use with the science slider (saves a lot of money):
when it takes 1 turn to discover the next 'science', turn the slider down to the point where it stays one turn. especially later in the game this can save a lot of gold.
You can also do the reverse if you badly need an advance. Move the slider so you'll have a slight negative income for 1 turn. I often fiddle with the research slider and I boosted my research by a few turns many times in a single game. I.e. Steam Power usually takes me 5 turns to discover but when I set research to 4 turns I'll have 1 negative turn. After that turn I can slide the research slider back and still discover Steam Power in the remaining 3 turns but now I'm making a profit too!
