It seems it's much harder to be successful scientifically in Civ3 than in Civ2 (at least for me). USually, I'm neck and neck with the Ai scientifically in Civ3, whereas in Civ2 i was waaay ahead.
Although in one game I was an entire age ahead of my opponents, I was in the mid-1900s and still in the Industrial Age.
What tips can you give to get advances fast and early (be as detailed as you want)?

Founding Cities is important. The more cities the more Science.
Also make very much Deals with other civs which enable you to get Gold per Turn. They both enable you to spend a higher percentage on Science and slow down your opponents Research-Rate, cos they have to lower their Science-Rate to fulfill their Trading-Agreements with you :D
For example I was at one time able to charge the Romans with 150 Gold/turn for Iron. I had much Surplus Iron Sources, whereas the Romans had none, therefore they bid very high :D

Build lots of cities, this means lots of commerce that you can then put into your science... Trade with other civs, buy other techs you don't have...or give them away for 20 gold per turn...then you can boost up your science rates...I gave spaceflight once to the indiands for 80 gold per turn!!
