Civ7 Developer Update (May 27), patch 1.2.1

Razing no longer adds war support against you! What a welcome change. My next run I'm going full apocalypse on the other civs. Probably Friedrich on Pangaea.
I figured they'd have to do something like this, otherwise "One more turn" would almost require you to keep the cities and take the max happiness hit from exceeding the settlement limit (7x5=35 happiness penalty IIRC). Established settlements could probably absorb that, but things would probably get a little frothy with the settlements you captured.

Edit: I'm assuming of course that your goal for OMT is to go scorched earth. My OMT mission is to remove Machiavelli from all versions of the Civ VII multiverse.

actual download size was probably under 1 gb on pc, i don't know how much the install added.
My downloaded data on PC was 3GB:

Any chance of moving the religion icon to the top of the City bar so that you can see it without having to move your unit out of the city first?

That same failure to launch on the "Begin"/"Continue" screen is still happening. First time I booted up today, I got the "black screen of text only" after I loaded my save from last night. Had to close the game window (Alt-F4), relaunch, and then it worked okay the second time.

Hope they nip this in the bud. I verified my files on Steam (Windows 11) and exited/restarted it, so it's clearly a common problem due to the update.

I'm having the same issue. I assumed it was a mod that needed to be updated so I removed all my mods and then started adding them back one at a time to try and find which one was the issue but was starting to think it's not the mods and came here to see if others are getting this issue. I wonder what is causing it? There is no way they would have put out this update with a bug like this but it's also hard to imagine it never happened to any devs while testing the update.

On the other hand, we don't know exactly how common this bug is or exactly what is causing it.

We do know that it is not intrinsic to the patch, because, for example, I have started several games post-patch to check on the Pangaea map generation and played one game to Exploration Age - with plenty of Mods enabled - and have had no problems at all.

What we don't know is what combination of patch + X is causing the problem, or if several different combinations of patch + X are causing it.

It's not the mods. It's happened to me without mods, and at the moment I have four mods installed (City Hall, Improved Plot Tooltip, and two Wonders-related mods) and the game launches. I have no idea why this problem intermittently occurs, but yet another glitch is the last thing this game needs.

So far, I think I've seen five people post about this issue since yesterday, plus someone else whose game crashed going into the Exploration Age.

In addition to the "black screen of text" I'm also getting this problem with the action panel. The bottom of the image is the bottom of my window -- I didn't crop anything out. That's what it looks like. Not all units have this problem, only some. For instance, army commanders appear ok, while fleet commanders have the same problem as the burning arrow units here.

I've had the "black screen of text" issue as well. Playing on Windows with zero mods.

Force-quit game, reboot, and re-open DID NOT work. Force-quit game, then re-open without rebooting DID work. Maybe an issue with loading in for the first time after a restart?

Does anyone know the numbers on how conquering affects influence? Doubling it from razing could be huge or inconsequential.

Don't get me wrong I don't want to talk trash about the great patch here, but it's a shame they took a look at razing and didn't decrease the turns needed to do it.

One thing I noticed they seem to have fixed that wasn’t in the patch notes was the inability to create roads with the merchant create road ability. There were many times when it wouldn’t let me create one but I noticed today I can.

I believe the influence penalty for conquered cities starts at 2 in antiquity and goes up by 2 each era, I don’t know if that’s the case for razed cities though.

Something that NEEDS to be documented. (apparently doesn't count if you get them in peace deal and doesn't count if you lose them in battle or peace deal but does still count if you raze them)

And the new fix... does that mean each razed city counts for 4 per Age... or does it mean each razed city doubles the cost of all cities (so after 1 razed city each conquered on is 4 per age, next 8 per age)?
I would guess the Former... but it could be
after razing 1 city conquered cities are 4 per age
after razing 2 they are 6 per age,
etc.

So basically you can raze as much as you like, you just can't do anything diplomatically that age, (unable to reject sanctions, do counter espionage, etc.)

That's it all right. After a couple more tests, I can say that the problem resurfaces each time I restart my laptop (Windows 11). The first launch of Civ VII produces that black screen of text and a dead end, but after I hit Alt-F4 to close the window and subsequently relaunch the game, it works okay. Obviously, rebooting the computer will simply repeat the crash.

This has happened four times now. Weird. Brand new problem I hadn't seen before in the 425-odd hours I've put into this game. At least it's a reproducible problem among multiple users, so hopefully Firaxis can get it fixed pretty quickly. Although, some folks on the Discord feed are saying that they can't get it to work at all even after relaunching the game, while another person indicated the problem cropped up again after a number of hours went by, despite not shutting down their system.

This is also a problem for me because I often have to restart my laptop after playing Civ VII in order to eliminate a scrolling lag that pops up on my display after a game session, especially when web browsing. This means I'll have to cycle through the crash yet again.

Anyone else finding combat substantially slower since the patch? Also the AI seems to be over-eager to offer up cities in peace deals again (and also maybe just plays worse in general? but I haven't played enough to say that for sure yet)

Maybe. It does seem to happen on the first launch of the game and after force quitting then relaunching it's ok as far as loading a save however, I just had the black screen on age transition after having already quit/relaunched.
