so i am using a civ with the scientific trait and when i go into the middle ages by trading for polytheism, my free tech is always engineering, but i want feudalism. Is there a way to choose which one i get somehow? This is frustrating me, and i remember there being a way but i forgot it.

Thanks

i always get engineering too

im interested in how to choose also. i always thought it was random.

In Civ 3 vanilla, in the early versions of it (at least), you had no choice which tech you got; it was always the same.

In PTW and Conquests, that has changed, somewhat. Now you can get any of the Tier 1 techs of the next age, but the selection process is random. You may get Nationalism or you may get Steam Power, but as players we still cannot control that.

Of course, if there are other SCI civs in the game, and you didn't get the tech you wanted, give them enough techs to join you in the new age, hope that they get what you want and try to trade for it.

It's always been fully random with me, I've even been given Medicine as my free tech a number of times :twitch:

Personally I prefer engineering over feudalism, although if there are not a lot of rivers around I might change my mind on that,

It's random. If you're the only scientific civ in the game, then you have no choice but to pick what the RNG gives you. If there are other scientific AS, then you can sell/gift them in the MA, see what they get and eventually trade techs.

I'm not sure about this, but there should be a way to optimize the outcome in case there are other scientific AS. You enter MA, sell/gift them in the interturn and they should get different techs. At the end, you are able to trade. But hey, i could be totally wrong on this, one should set up a test game and see what happens. If you do that, i'd be interested in knowing the result.

it's random. you'll get your monotheism when you're not religious and you'll bloody well like it!

actually, there is a trick you can use, which helps somewhat. it only works if there's other scientific civs in the game; the more the better.

you gift them into the new (medievil, in this case) era and see what they get. chances are you'll get all 3 of monothesim, feudalism and engineering.

better yet, click 'what's the big picture?' and gift them all into the new age and trade with them; if you've done it right you should get theology or invention.

if you have a couple of scientific great leaders on standby (and why wouldn't you, the ancient wonders are mostly crap) and this helps you get sun tzus and leonardos, then you're laughing, game over already
