Screenshot Program

I am sure this is an easy question to answer but would anyone know of a good screenshot program for the MacOSX to use for Civ3? i would also like to use it with some other games as well.

Do you mean to edit screenshots or to take screenshots?

<cmd><shift>3 works fine; you get a PDF file, which I edit in Photoshop, but you may also use e.g. GraphicConverter.

Ya, I meant taking screenshots. The Graphic Converter program seems to be only for Windows though. I want a progam for MacOSX. I will try the cmd+shift+3 thing though.

Command shift 3 takes a screenshot and makes a file on your desktop. Control-command-shift-3 puts the screen image on the clipboard. Both these work for Civ3 as well.

You can either open or paste these images in Preview, where you can do simple cropping, or use an image editing program. GraphicConverter *is* a Mac program, it's been around for years on OS 9 and now OS X. I actually use Photoshop Elements, which is pretty cheap IMHO and has most of the facilities from the full Photoshop that you could wish for.

Thanks AlanH for clarifying. About the Graphic Converter, I just realized the source of my confusion is there is more than one Graphic Converter program. The one I downloaded was from here, when I should've downloaded it from here.

The Lemke one is the one you meant right?

Correct. It's a demo/nag-ware, and you have to wait 30 seconds or somthing each time you launch it until you pay. I think PS Elements is a good deal in comparison, but at least you can use and try GC before you pay out.

Lemke's program, GraphicConverter X 5.2.1, is the one I use.

I think you'll find that bookmarking and using this site to be useful:

Click the appropriate tab near the top, [Mac OS X, Mac OS, WinDoze, etc.] and you're set.

VT tracks almost every Mac app/update availible. [use 'Search for Software' field] One notable exception is Civ III 1.29b2, probably 'cause b2 allows you to run without the cd installed. (But that's OK, it is avail thru CivFan here: Civ III 1.29b2

Also note that Civ III 1.21g (which ought to be listed on the CivFan Civ III patches page) is required to use the Editior. (I have a folder called: "Civ III b2" and another called "Civ III/Editor" which has 1.21g and the Editor.)

Anyway, Graphic Converter gets updated often, so it's work checking VT often. (I check every day for the latest update list.)

Can someone tell me how to take screenshots with Graphic Converter? Which menu is it in? I feel stupid....

You don't take screenshots with GraphicConverter. You take screenshots with MacOS using Command-Shift-3 to create a full screen image in a file called PictureNN.pdf, where NN is a serial number, on your desktop.

You use GraphicConverter or Photshop or whatever to edit the picture - crop it, resize it, annotate it .... and to save it as a jpeg or gif to upload here.

More optional info ...

There are alternative key combinations - include the Control key to put the screenshot on the Clipboard instead of into a desktop file. Change 3 to 4 to capture a selected area of the screen, but this doesn't work in Civ3 in my experience. Using 4 you can use space to select just the window under the cursor.
