I want to have a camera in my horse trailer to monitor my horse when travelling.

Rather than splash out on a fancy camera system with a fancy price I thought why not use a webcam connected to a laptop. To do this I either need a very long lead to get from the trailer to the car or a webcam connected cordlessly much like many mice are.

I thought this would be simple, however when I looked, all the wireless webcams I found connected either over the internet or via a wireless network. Unfortunately I don't have a wireless network in my car, neither do I have mobile internet access. The whole point of the webcam was to do it on the cheap so I won't be getting a wireless network in the car or paying for mobile internet just for this.

I did find a logitech cordless webcam but that was no longer made.

Does anyone know of a suitable webcam?

I don't know of a camera like that, but you could wire it by running the wires along with the other trailer wires and have a plug connector where the trailer wires connect. I didn't come up with anything in a quick search.

You probably wont find anything that will work for that long of a distance and so much stuff inbetween. You're better off getting a network enabled webcam or something and connecting it to your laptop like that.

Thanks, that would have the range I need and I can run the camera on battery. But would need to find a way of powering the receiver unit in the car. I'll also have to check the inputs on the laptop - not sure if it has video in. A receiver unit that plugs into and powers from a USB port would be better.

You could buy a little battery-powered tv for that purpose and mount that somewhere near/by your dashboard.

Is there such a thing as battery/car-battery powered tvs/lcds?

I do know that I have a portable DVD player whch works with car battery, but not sure after that.

Sure. they have adapters. And they sell tvs just for car use.

I can buy a specialist trailer camera system for £150 to £200 depending on the spec I go for, so if I start buying a portable tv and such like I might as well just go for the pukka system.

The laptop is wireless enabled, and there are quite a few wireless enabled webcams about, but I was under the impression that they could not connect direcly together but needed a router of some kind, have I got this wrong? I've not had anything to do with wireless systems before now so if 2 wireless enabled devices can connect directly together that may well help. With all the cheap webcams out there it seems a pity there isn't one that justs works like a cordless mouse. Sending a lot more data I suppose.
