Hello there civfanatics
I've often heard people say that sailing to the new world on the beginning of a terra map would be an interesting strategy for Polynesia
However, has anyone ever tried it?

So I started a game to test this strategy out, although on a low difficulty because I didn't know how it would turn out
Here are the settings: King/Standard map/No city states/Scarce recourses(or whatever is the opposite of legendary start)/And I bumped up the number of AI Civs from 7 to 15

It was my first marathon victory - Science victory on turn 1048, I don't really know how good that is though since I normally always play standard speed

As you can see, I was able to catch up points-wise pretty quickly, climbing to the top around turn 260:

And the result; a pretty easy victory. I had a lot of room to expand while the AI was stuck with a measly 1-6 cities. I should probably have tried on emperor at least to make it more interesting

I'd like to see some other people try it and post their results, especially at high difficulty levels like immortal or diety
Anyway here are some pros and cons I found for doing this

Pros:
-You do not have to be afraid of being attacked, ever. I literally had no war during the entire game (This may differ on higher levels)
-The AI seems very reluctant to colonize or even explore the new world, not a single AI city was ever not settled on the old world
-Since you're so far away, the AI will really like you. (No more 'They covet our lands' :)) Only one AI got gaurded with me for some reason and that was Alexander (but he was almost dead anyway :crazyeye:)
-All the AI's in the new world will hate eachother and fight constantly, wasting a lot of :c5production: on military units, while you don't need to do that at all!

Cons:
-The new world really isn't that interesting in terms of recourses - I only had 4 (4!!!!!) different luxury resources on the ENTIRE CONTINENT  - And the recourses you find there aren't even unique to the new world! (In my opinion this is a bug and should be changed)
Infact, my main export was probably open borders
-It got pretty boring fighting no wars and pressing end turn a thousand times :p - This is mostly my frustrations with marathon speed though, I wasn't prepared for it to be so excruciatingly slow

Anyway even though it went slow, I still generally had a pretty good time
please say how you did :)
ps: sorry for my bad spelling, I speak dutch :mischief:

Sorry, what's a "Terra" start? There are no Civs on the other side of the world? That doesn't seem like a fair representation, as the cultures represented by the Aztecs, Incas and Iroquois originated in the "New World," which would be empty in this type of map, is that right?

Yes one continent is completely empty, except for barbarians
And the natives living there could still be represented by the barbarians running all over the place
I used to like the terra map in Civ4 because it created interesting gameplay, but it's almost always not worth it in civ5 though :(

Interesting strategy. Are there city states in the new world?

EDIT: I see they are turned off in your OP, but if they were on would they be there?

Point 1 probably explains Point 2. I do agree a new world should have at least a couple unique resources, as this is how the real new world was.

Yes but the other continent had all luxuries on it and my continent was only a little bit smaller :)
