Next tech round....

Fishing - 6
Pottery - 10
Animal Husbandry - 11
Archery - 8
Mysticism - 8
Masonry - 10
Iron Working - 24

Current Tech Tree with all current times to research for each tech

Theoretical Tech Tree minimum research time with 2 more :commerce: from re-tasking citizens, to give us an idea the most that growth will improve things, also in case we do want to have a citizen start working a tile with :commerce:.

Let's research mysticism.

How many religions have been founded (my regular comp is broken, I've been using a different one for the past few weeks, and it doesn't have CIV on it)? We need to get one. Soon.

Hinduism has been founded by "Unknown", I imagine Buddhism is not far behind.

Yes, I think we've lost our chance for the early religions. There was talk of using the Oracle to get a later religion and we need mysticism, etc. to build the Oracle.

Given our current situation with a lack of Copper I'd suggest Archery first, then go down the line to Priesthood (for Oracle)

Archery - 8
Mysticism - 8
Meditation - 12
Priesthood - 9

So a total of 37 turns all together, ignoring growth so that time will likely reduce a bit.

Oracle is then 150 hammers to build. (Double speed with Marble, and right now there is no Marble in sight.)

Other Option
replace Meditation with Polytheism - 15
Then go for Masonry - 10
And then go for Monotheism (Judaism) - 18

More time intensive path (taking 59 turns to research), ignoring time to build Oracle, and we may not necessarily get Monotheism first still.

If we don't have those resources we're dead meat whether we know we have them or not. I think they're correct that we should move in the direction of the oracle, that's going to be a big project and we want to get working on it.

Also in order to get Code of Laws using the oracle we're going to need to get pottery and alphabet, those might be good choices after we get the techs for oracle.

I doubt we're going to need military units any time soon it looks like the map is wide open AI's prefer to expand before fighting wars if we get archery to make sure we have a little bit of defense as suggested by Falcon we should be all set on the military front.

Why would we use the Oracle to get CoL? It would be much wiser to use it to get Civil Service instead.

Why Civil Service, especially if we want to get a Religion...

Civil Service Requires CoL or Feudalism anyway...

The other possible Religious option I see is Theology

(Either way we must research Writing in order to open Theology or Code of Law)

FYI: Philosophy requires CoL and Divine Right requires Theology... so those are somewhat mute points...

In the past I've always used the oracle to get metal working. Forges rule, as all people know. But I wouldn't be adverse to going for a religion either with the wonder.

Firstly I think we should go for AH, so we can see where we should settle our soon to be settler (I want to see if there are horses before we decide to settle down.)

I'll admit, Metal Casting is always oh so tempting when using the oracle, but Code of Laws is so much more beneficial. It founds a religion which can potentially provide 1 happiness and 2 gold in each city. It gives us courthouses, which are absolutely necessary to expand, either peacefully or by brute force, and it unlocks Caste System, which is good for a Specialist Economy.

Civil Service Requires CoL

Civil Service costs more :science: than CoL does and as you said, CoL is required for CS. I'd hate to waste a free tech on CoL when we could get a more expensive tech.

Granted, if this game continues like it appears and we bounce around tech wise, than I can see using it for CoL instead. If we stay focused (which I'm afraid we won't), than it'll be no problem waiting for CS.

We can get more focused by discussing strategies instead of individual techs.

Yes, I know that I pushed for an individual tech choice for the first one, because basically we were out of time to decide. But we don't need to keep going on that way. :)

A strategy discussion would be helpful. I say we need a strategy to found a religion. :D BTW, researching specific techs to see where resources are is not a strategy. It's a tactic at best. Researching AH and then IW if there are no horses is a good way to focus on resources but not a good way to focus on a strategy.

Do we have a consensus that we want to try to build the Oracle? Perhaps we need a discussion for that first.

In any event, nothing said here has convinced me that we should delay researching mysticism.
