I have lost my last 2 games when the AI called for a UN vote while I was in the middle of trying for a domination victory or failing that a space race victory. I have learned too late that I should not select the UN victory option if I'm going to try for military victory or space race victory. Or am I just being a civ wimp?

I know you're supposed brown nose them with gifts but when you're close to even you don't have much that will turn a po'd ai into polite not to mention gracious.

I'd appreciate some thought on when and when not to select UN.

UN should never be a problem for conquistadors like you, rainmaker: just raze the city it's in.

i always leave the UN victory condition on but never hold my own vote. i like military victories but i keep the UN in sort of as an added challenge. there are many ways to deal with the UN such as:

1) build it before someone else does or failing that ...
2) conquer or raze it ... or failing that ...
3) sabotage production in the city producing it - ive never actually done this. i suppose it could be costly if 15 ai's are all producing it somewhere at the same time
4) keep your reputation good and do whatever is in your power to hurt the ai reputation so that they cannot win a vote.
5) did i miss any? as for leaving the UN victory condition off, no i dont think it's a wimpy choice at all.

I view that building the UN is almost a pre-requisite for winning a domination or even a spaceship game, especially if you are a bad guy. Pre-build and make sure you get it, or use the traditional tactics (wild gifts before votes and the like.

Just build it yourself and deny the vote.

I leave all the "normal" victory conditions on. I like the challenge of having to account for all the possibilities while going for the type of victory I've decided on. My feeling is that turning off victory conditions that are inconvenient for me diminishes the game.

The other option is to win by conquest/domination well before the Modern Age, and then no-one can build the thing.

If an AI does manage to build the UN, declare war on them and ally everyone else against them. There will be no vote, since a nation at war will not vote for the nation they are warring against.

I think the UN thing is stupid and always have it off.

I usually go for Space Race victory, but regardless... I just don't like the UN.

it wouldnt be so bad if it wasnt so easy to manipulate it. you can go by the whole game backstabbing everyone and still win by the UN. all you need to do is pay everyone off the last couple of turns and your pretty much gaurenteed a win

Perhaps I'm missing something but is the builder of the UN the only one that can call for a vote? I assumed once it was built any civ could call for it. That's why I never built it.

BTW My major problem with it in my last game was that it was built in an ai city on a 4 city size island. Since I was playing pangaea I never developed a navy. That late in the game it became real difficult to destroy it.

Yes, only its owner (not necessarily the builder) of the UN can call the vote.

You could bribe everyone against him and he wouldn't call it cause he'd know he will lose.

I just lost a fun builder game to the UN vote. I easily could have built the UN, but I held off thinking that I had time to work it in before the ai could catch up. Since I was peaceful and played nice I was confident that they would vote for me anyway. Anyway they built it out from under me and called a vote and I lost.

Wow!!!! Soooo I could have built the UN and saved what had been a great game. Dah I thought the UN was llike the Manhattan Project. Once built all could use it. (or am I wrong about that too?) YOu see these are wonders I have always tried to avoid.

You're right about MP. :)

If it weren't the case, space race victory would never occur, because someone would win by vote many turns before.

I guess by now it shows that I have what could be called a cowardly playing style. I just try to keep my reputation clean, and start bribing everyone once someone gets the actual building of it underway.
