Seperate the RPG and Demo Game

All very eloquent in response, but the reality is that participation in the demo game only because of interest in the RPG is NOT helpful to the demo game itself and has been obviously hurtful, as people are taking offices to get RPG salary but not paying primary attention to their office, as opposed to their new pub, land tile, whatever.

No offense to Gonzo, or others who feel the same, but frankly, the demo game deserves more than passing charitible interest.

You can easily play your own RPG civ game... you don't need the demo game.

Quite true, Bill. Honestly, I'm not a fan of the whole "Leader? Here's some extra cash!" concept. Positions in the DG gov't. aren't RPG positions, and therefore shouldn't IMHO be rewarded with RPG money. It would end that problem, and maybe encourage people to GET A JOB in the RPG instead of living off gov't. pensions. Kill two birds with one stone, so to speak.

that sounds fine to me. I don't think anything is added to the RPG by having salary bonuses due to the demogame positions. If it's causing demogame problems then they should go.

Bah, what good is RPG gold anyway? Now if I could use some of the 20,000g to buy some votes....

Quoting Bill_in_PDX:
The state of the actual demo game is appalling, and frankly not worth the effort any more.

Funny, Bill...I rarely see this type of defeatist, hopeless post coming from an RPGer. Good thing for you, that you have the CJ cheering you on or we might lose you. (note: no smiley) The reason you don't see these posts coming from the RPGers saying "Hey, let's trash this Demogame where the Leaders never post much of anything, keep the threads half alive, or initiat polls!" is because they're having fun. Why are they having fun? Because the DG has become boring. And it's not the RPG's fault that the DG has become boring. It's the Demogame's fault. I am a long time avid poster in the DG forums. I don't care how many sub-forums you make, 1, 4, 10, I'll still participate. The RPG was formed to add another demension to the DG because DG1 was becoming a little lackluster in the final weeks. It allowed people who weren't the CJ type to participate in a portion of the Demogame that didn't require them to have the vocabulary to work in the Justice Department, or the wits to be a Military Leader. It allowed people to cheer on Fanatika from the sidelines in a way they couldn't do before. And they are still doing it. They're not posting threads about how the Demogame sucks and should be separated from the RPG. (Even tho they have cause to.)

Fact of the matter is, the RPG can be more of a Civ3 environment than the DG forums, as the DG forums are mostly filled with people showing us how witty and charming and funny they are, instead of laying down heart-felt opinions about the game matter. We now, in DG2, have a new echelon of Leaders ruling. I think one of the main problems with DG2 is that these Leaders found out it was too much work for them to do and still have fun. Oh, well.

Take a look at my post count, Bill. Do you think I'm uninvolved in the Demogame? I'm very active in the RPG, but maybe you should boot me out to another forum. After all, I'm heavily involved in the RPG and and only participate in the DG threads as a passing thing.

The DG's problems are not the RPG's fault. It is the fault of the DG. Go ahead and cut out the RPG. Then spend the rest of the Demogame figuring out what you can cut out next to solve the DG's problems. Just remember not to cut out your part, before you know what is happening.

Are there posts with these heart-felt opinions about the game matter in the RPG subforum? If so, please let me know how to find them easier so I can start looking there too.

I admit that I also have begun pursuing some limited involvement in the RPG. So, while I can certainly understand the appeal of the RPG, I also realize that our position in the "real" game is tenuous at best. The RPGers may not feel any obligation to participate in the Demogame proper, but I wonder what those individuals will do or say if we can no longer hold onto our leadership position in the game and fall so far behind the AI that we cannot possibly win, or God forbid, we are conquered/eliminated.

It seems logical to me that even a little extra involvement in the non-RPG forums could make a huge difference in our ability to improve our position in the game, thereby extending everyone's enjoyment in the RPG forum. Cyc stated that the RPG has given citizens on the sideline a chance to enjoy the demogame as never before. Well, if Fanatika is eliminated from the game by the AI, there'll be no sideline to cheer from.

Sorry, Fionn. We really do put a lot of work into not scaring the sheep of the Demogame.

40J, the RPG is not the place for opinions on Game content, although a lot of that takes place there anyways. The place for those opinions are the other DG sub-forums, but good luck finding anything there, unless your looking for some new material for your stand-up routine.

@Cyc- Did you just call Fionn a sheep?

Well, I don't really know if we can work our way out of this rut we're in. "the honeymoon's over" as they say, now we need to decide what we want to do about the "non-funness" of the DG.

@Bill: No offense taken :)

As I stated before, the RPG just interests me more. I can't help that, I just find it funner. Instead of just registering for the DemoGame I've tried to come down and vote, go to some turn chats and even chat rep for forty this last term. The DG deserves a lot, but passing interest certainly can't hurt ;) Now i do disagree here though:

All very eloquent in response, but the reality is that participation in the demo game only because of interest in the RPG is NOT helpful to the demo game itself and has been obviously hurtful, as people are taking offices to get RPG salary but not paying primary attention to their office, as opposed to their new pub, land tile, whatever.

I don't think many people are just taking jobs for cash ;) It's REALLY not that much money anyways, it's merely an incentive to pay for some of the work done in the DG. And seeing as it is an RPG, I think what's done makes sense, as a real life governer would make more then someone not contributing the cash bonuses work out fine.

What I've personally seen from hours of chatting with those who run for positions is that they are the type of people who really get into the DG, it wouldn't matter if you penalized them gold in the RPG they'd still do it!

I don't really think that's what hurting the DG here.

@Grandmaster: Your post is ludicrous. All the time the RPG gets "Why don't you follow the demogame?" then you just flat out state "DG positions aren't RPG positions." If it was your way there would merely be more seperation! Now why can't we just buy all the land, DG land isn't RPG land.......

Anyways, I'm too tired to argue. My opinion is to try to improve the DG, seperating the RPG just isn't going to do it.

@Gonzo: All I've been saying is that if people getting elected for RPG bonuses are causing problems in the DG, I feel that the added cash for elected officials is an optional enough institution to do away with for the good of the game as a whole. Allow me to clarify what I meant by "not RPG positions." What I meant is that someone working in the Military Office, or the Trade Department, or wherever, isn't putting in any extra work in the RPG (but lots of work in the DG... we hope....) Just because your President doesn't mean your doing anything special in the RPG, so why get extra RPG gold? I just think it might solve some problems if we ended it for a while. This isn't seperation; this is troubleshooting by uninstalling unnecessary components.

@Grandmaster: NO ONE is getting elected for extra money. It's a bonus. I haven't seen a single person who's taken a job for the extra 20 or 30 gpt. The RPG is part of the demogame, if you're working in the DG, you should be rewarded in the RPG as an incentive.

GO AHEAD AND KILL THE BONUSES, IT WILL NOT SOLVE A SINGLE PROBLEM.

i didnt know we got paid extra gold until gonzo told me 2 terms ago, and its not like the leaders make a killing on gpt anyways. Like all government jobs the pay is lousy ;)

@ Cyc - I will attempt to respond to your three different posts.

First, clearly you failed to read for understanding the first post I made where I pointed out that it is more than understood that the folks playing the RPG game are having fun, and I don't see anything wrong with that.

I am merely pointing out that the two games are clearly two different entities now, and only tied together due to a map.

Further, the link of paying leadership positions in the Demo Game with RPG dollars is a fine concept until leaders begin to spend most of their time in RPG. That is fine if that is what they wish to do, but the link should be broken.

I never said do away with RPG, I never said that all RPG people are evil demo game killers, and I certainly never said to banish you to another thread.

So I fail to understand how you can accuse me of anything in that regard, and find your comments along those lines to be wholly misplaced and frankly disappointing.
