Seperating the Graphics Engine From the Game

My biggest problem with CivIV was the graphics engine. Specifically, that a board game that could effectively be played on an excel sheet required a computer that had a significantly greater graphics capability. I wanted to be able to play with only a minimum of my computer's energies diverted towards making the game look pretty. While many aspects of CivIV could be modded, this was unchangeable - the 3d graphics engine would always be in use.

I'm not interested in playing on something as dull as an excel sheet, but I don't think the game needs anything more than the simple, much less intense, 2d graphics used in CivI or CivII.

Does anyone here know if it is possible to mod the graphics of the game so that a computer only has to work on generating very basic images?

Wow, I was completely oblivious to that. And to the idea that this game could run on a notebook. What type of notebook do you have and what are the specs - also how big a map can you play with?
