serial number?

I just bought Civ3 Complete and installed it. When I try to run it I am prompted to enter the serial number. I have looked all over the documentation and disc and files and so on and still can't find it.

I have delayed asking for help, thinking that eventually I would stumble upon the answer hiding in plain sight. But I have given up and am now asking for help.
