I've been trying to set up a LAN with my XP Pro and Win98SE systems with some luck.

The computers are on a hub/5 port switch, and they both go through a router. My systems can communicate through a LAN game, such as Civ3. But, they can't seem to share files and such.

What's the basic run-through on each system to "notice" each other? They're already set to have file sharing, and they have a name assigned to them, but they just don't see each other.

EDIT: Just used the Win XP Pro CD to install the network, but my Win98 system says, "Unable to browse network". I can't find the Win98SE computer on my XP Pro computer.

Both can also send/receive packets (I ping'd both of them) with no problem).

Are they in the same Workgroup? This could cause some problems. And have you shared any resources yet? I think XP only shows shared resources and not computers.

Since I bought a Router, these things have usually just worked automatically between XP, ME and 98SE, after configuring each for network.

Your windows98 make they are on same workgroup, range of IP's, subnet, they have non identical name.

I use a router, and all works good here with dhcp

You know that 98 uses WINS as default and XP uses DNS. You therefore have to install something on one of them, and I forgot what is it :(

I don't think you have to install anything. Specifying WINS and DNS servers are done in the IP properties.

try installing NetBEUI this is what I have had to have installed on a win98/XP net work.

Also if you are using tcp/ip it can take up to 15 mins for the computers to see each other. I recomend tcp/ip and using the dchp server that comes with winXP

This is from my expierence.

I have a router that both computers connect too. Also, both computers have a software firewall.
