Settling on a luxury

Hi,
I've tried to research as much as possible but I can't seem to find a definite answer to my question.

When settling my capital (or for that matter any city) on one of the best spot I think the general consensus is Plains (hills) next to fresh water. The one that is better than that is the above with a luxury as you apparently also get the luxury bonus as well as well as its yield...so for example Jade is a luxury so it gives +1 culture...

Great I get all that.

But do I also get the Jade resource?

I went to List of reports > Resources > Resources

and right at the bottom I see luxuries jade icon and 1 next to it. But that is the only info I have for it.

When I work a tile with a resource I get a little icon right at the top telling me how much of that item I have. But, I've never seen anything about a luxury when I've settled on it.

Basically, I was under the impression you could sell luxuries for good money if you do it from the start but when I have traded with an AI and they buy a luxury from me it's only from a tile I can improve and not from the settled tile.

I get the resources are not destroyed when you settle, so where can I see it then?

Thank you.

If you settle on a luxury, you get a copy of the luxury and the benefits that go with it. This means that you get the +1 amenity. If you want to trade the luxury because you don't care about the amenity or you have an extra copy of the luxury, you simply go to the trade screen with the AI and sell it to them for cash or GPT. Does that answer your question?

The top bar will tell you how many strategic resources you have, but not how many luxuries. The easiest way to tell how many resources you have is to use the trade screen. If you have 1 available, it’s yours to sell or use You use 1 copy automatically so long as you have it, but you can usually only use 1 copy for yourself. If you have more than 1 copy, it’s probably time to trade the surplus away, since they are doing nothing for amenities. You don’t lose the tile yields when you trade though.

Thank you. I am confusing strategic resources with luxury resources. I thought everything gave you quantities of items. Like horse resources would give you lots of horses when you have them in your city. I thought luxury resources would do the same. So I was expecting 10 jade items to sell or 44 Amber...but they just don't work that way. It suddenly clicked when you said copy..lol

So If I have two identical resources in my city. I can sell one copy and keep one for the bonuses they give.

Thanks for the clarity.

Thank you. This helps a lot. :)

I enjoy settling on luxuries for my capital. But I am always averse to not settling my capital on my first turn.

I winder if anyone's analyzed how many turns you should put off settling your capital in order to settle it on a luxury.

The youtube Civ gods seem to go with 2, 3 at the most, but there are other factors besides luxuries than go into settling locations.

I'm a fan of the early yields from settling on a faith, culture, or science luxury and sometimes restart until I get a start where I can without sacrificing fresh water and 4-yield tiles.

But even when settling you still require the appropriate science (mining/masonry/irrigation)?
