Setup.exe on Disk One of C3C Pack Not Working Properly

Hello all. I'm not too hardcore of a Civ III player, so I've never really felt the need to post here. Unfortunately, I'm having some trouble with installing C3C that I can't seem to find any help with. I recently formatted my HDs and so my C3C installation went with it. Now, whenever I run Setup.exe on the first disk, I get the error "_isX.tmp" has enountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the incovenience," where X is usually a number or an uppercase letter. Before formatting my drives, C3C installed and ran wonderfully, so I have no idea exactly what the problem is.

I've got Windows XP with SP2 and all critical updates installed. As far as I can tell, there is no difference between my current installation of Windows and the one before formatting my HDs. Thanks in advance for any help!

I'd try cleaning the discs, see if that helps.
I don't currently have a CD cleaning kit with me, but I did try cleaning the CD with a clean, slightly wet cloth, wiping from the inside of the disk to the outer edge. Unfortunately, the problem still persists. I'll pick up a cleaning kit the first chance I get, but if that doesn't work, I'm not sure what to do (short of buying a new set of disks, that is).

Weird...dunno what it could be.

Can you try installing the discs on a different puter, see if it works there?

Actually, I recently had the chance to do just that. A friend of mine was nice enough to let me use his computer and the installation went along just fine. I tried again on my computer and the error is still occurring. Oh well. My guess would be that something didn't go quite right during my last installation of Windows. Maybe I'll just try again. :(

Also, I error occurred while I was trying to post this reply, so please forgive any double-posting.

I don't see any double posts, so no worries.

Maybe it's your CD drive. Perhaps you can try cleaning that, if you have a disc that'll do that.

I hadn't thought of that. Thanks for the idea; I'll get on it as soon as I can.

I just got CIV 3 Complete. Installed it fine on my mom's computer. Brought it home, and now it won't install. I get the same isX.tmp error that you do. 'X' moves up by 1 each time you try to run the install (i.e. it's is1.tmp the first time, then is2.tmp the 2nd time, and so on). I've tried everything short of a fresh reformat, to no avail. Surely somebody else must be having this problem?

I have the same exact problem, and I have had this game on my computer before. So there should be no reason for it not to load this time.

It was removed through a format, so no it wasn't an uninstallation.

Any suggestions??

Just did a total reformat of my drive, and guess what, I'm still having the problem. Tried installing the game fresh, after installing SP1, and again after SP2 and it doesn't make a difference.

This is obviously not an isolated issue, but something seriously wrong with the install software. I'm at my wits end as their tech support is useless. Time to take it back to the store, fight with them for a 1/2 hour while they treat me like a criminal, and likely end getting nothing better than store credit (if I'm lucky) for my trouble. Sickening.

I must give kudos to Take 2's tech support. They were very responsive and didn't give up. It's a crappy workaround, but at least it works:

Dear Sir/Madam

Thank you for contacting Take 2 Technical Support.

Put Disc 1 into Drive
Right click on the disc drive game is in and press explore
Create a folder on your desktop
Highlight everything and copy them and put them into the folder
Put in disc 2 and repeat
(If you have more than 2 discs keep copying them over until all discs are
copied to folder)
Then open up thew folder that is on your desktop and click on setup.exe
which will intiate the installation process

Please be sure to delete all previous correspondence when replying. This
will help us to process your response in a more timely and efficient manner.

Kind Regards,
Take 2 Technical Support

Give even more kudos as Civ3 isn't even their product....

I had to do this exact same thing to get CSI:Dark Motives installed on my system.... it's a pain, but it usually works.
