SGOTM 08 - Fifth Element

I missed the comment about hitting J's Iron. I need to look to see best way to do that.
You have a Mace, Longbow, and Ballista Elephant loaded on that galleon just Southeast of Joao's Iron just waiting to do that. ;) Hopefully, they can dig in after plundering the tile so Joao can suicide some of his troops on them.

Ok so amphibious assault with the mace. Hold it with the LB and plunder with the BE. Easy enough.

That's just gonna be like 7 turns. If that.

The last TS was only 6. I think ~8 turns/TS is plenty for this late in the game. We only should have 80 turns left. So about 10 TS to go.

If you really want to play longer, we need to discuss civics.

No need to stop the TS after communism, we can decide now what other civics we want to change, if any.
Representation is far away, slavery is useful for newly conquered cities.
Unless you want to go back to Caste, there's not much to discuss.

We can try to offer CoL, Mono and Aestetics for Engineering to Joao. maybe add our WM and some money. it's a good trade, IMO.

The plan is clear: try the trade, than start the war.
Some more cats are needed, sure. More units, too.

edit: xposted with WT.
Yes, if we aim to close in t250, we have not many TSs. Better fix a new rule for 8 turns?
opinions, please!

That's ok. I'll hold up there. Any small mistake can get magnified into multiple turns right now. I'll get lib->commu and save there.

Don't sell the bear's fur before the bear is killed :p porta sfiga!!! (brings rotten luck)

I agree that short turnsets are a good idea from here out.

I'm good with shorter turnsets as well.

Things went very well. 3 cities down ?? to go. Survived 2 dicey rng rolls unscathed. Really having either of them not work out would have been pretty bad, but here we are. I edited in lots of comments thru the log so more notes are there.

Lib->comm is in.

All hail general culdeus! You got all 3 cities by the time Communism came in!?! I can't wait to check out the details. Great achievement.

I see we didn't raze any cities. I'm not to sure about santarem. I suppose it should pay for itself eventually.

We should not make any more mines. These are not as good as grass/workshop.

Great Spy. That's a golden age, agree? Good time to switch civics. Blub did not mention Pacifism as an option. Does that make military too expensive? We could probably use the birth rate. And now we can have a no-anarchy religion switch too (once in the goldenAge). Do we want to anger everyone with our religion? The GAge player has to do a lot of MM. Discuss...

Great job ferrying troops, we need to keep doing that.

FarCanal doesn't need a barracks. Just build wealth if you can't think of anything to build.

We'll probably have guilds in 1 turn with the golden age. Parma will soon build grocer/bank. It should also be doing wealth or research, not starting a longbow it can't finish.

I don't like to have workers remove jungle only to have it grow back. We also pay $$ for workers outside our borders. Move them in and workshop some grass.

Ulundi needs to keep working cottages. Take some off the clam if you don't want to grow any more. It should build an observatory, not another cat.

How many galleons do we need? I think we have plenty. We only need a couple to move the troops over. Marbles can stop those and maybe do a wonder...Kremlin?
Once we have chem we can do frigate.
Stoneopolis also just finished a galleon, so don't start another. Observatory? or wealth until it's time for frigates.

Courthouse is not the thing to build in Santarem. With StateProp on these will not be worth the hammers. When in doubt, wealth.

Tech: Change to Gunpowder first!
Augustus already has guilds and Gandhi will have it in 2 turns. We might get it free.

WoooHooo! Very nicely done culdeus! :goodjob:

Looks like things are going to get a little tougher with that stack in Oporto. Still, considering the turnaround time, I'd say that was about as good as we could hope for.

I only saw one little nitpicky thing beyond what has already been noted: Mesix wanted the Heroic Epic in a city across the sea IIRC. Looks like we've got about 90 hammers into it in Nobamba now. Probably not a big deal...

Superbly executed invasion.

Well, that seems very well done, culdeus! :D Apart from the great unit skills, this was interesting:
Turn 178, 1180 AD: Gandhi's Golden Age has begun!!!
Turn 178, 1180 AD: Gandhi has completed The Taj Mahal!

Attitude Change: Joao II(Portugal) towards Charlemagne(Holy Rome), from 'Pleased' to 'Friendly'
The latter is not truly indicitive, but shows that they are probably trading and what not. Hopefully there won't be any bribed DOWs.

I rarely tech guilds myself, and usually trade for it. I'd usually be happy enough to wait, but with a GA, econ will be .. what 4 or 5 turns? Is waiting 2 turns worth it? What are the chances of econ being teched by the AI first? I saw Indian and HRE GEs born this tS, but no GMs.

It might be an idea to start signposting cities now that we are getting large. Even with good PPPlans, it is easy to get sidetracked. For starters, signs such as:
science = build obs, uni, etc, then bank, market, etc
gold = bank, market, etc (no science)
military = barracks, units - possibly specialise with mounted, navy, etc
and so on.

Just a note - my flighty life continues, and i'll be away for the next 5 days or so. Should be able to get online, but not play.

We already put beakers in guilds, no hope to win the E-race if we res GP.
Let's start a GAge, maybe not immediately, wait a couple turns.
Then we can revolt to FR and SP, unless we prefer Merc.

Good warmonger, Culdeus!

updated page 1

I also usually like to build HE in a coastal city.

Nice start to the war Culdeus.

I agree with WastinTime...switch to Gunpowder and make a priority for Rifeling. We can trade Liberalism for Guilds and maybe Banking too if the AI researching it in time.

State Property and Free Religion seem like the civics of choice. Getting a GA for the GS seems like the thing to do.

How many more units do we need to finish off Joao? Wouldn't the HE be better on the other continent after we make inroads there? We may need to pound out some defensive units quickly if the AI players dogpile us.

On the war front we should try to take Oporto and Lisbon on our next turnset if possible. We need to move the macemen down from Santarem to the front lines. If Joao counterattacks, it is likely to be at Evora, not Santarem. Our fresh units will continue to funnel through Santarem as well, so there is no need to keep combat units holed up there.

I am open to discussion about getting the Heroic Epic in a coastal city on our continent. We can always use our galleons to ferry reinforcements and defensive units to the other continent. I'm just not sure that building it here will speed up our conquest of Joao any. We may get one or two additional units before we finish him off. It would be nice to produce all the units we need on the other continent and let our cities back home work on the more advanced wonders.

The Taj Mahal was built in Delhi. That was the only wonder built, so I am not going to update the list right now. After the AI builds the Spiral Miniot and Versais we can reexamin the position of the wonders. I think that it would be a shame to let Ghandi get to the Statue of Liberty before we take out his powerhouse cities. We could sure use the extra great people for every city on our continent.

We don't seem to have good relations with any of the AI players. We need to start trading (and maybe even gifting) to increase relations with one or two key AI players or else we risk getting dogpiled on the other continent. Engineering and Theology can probably be traded for Optics with the right AI players. Celtia is the worst enemy of HRE, so if Justin is going to be our ally when we attack Ghandi we should stop trading with Celtia. If Justin demands that we stop, that wold be a good demand to cave into for diplo reasons.

On the war front we should try to take Oporto and Lisbon on our next turnset if possible. We need to move the macemen down from Santarem to the front lines.

Disagree here. There's a galleon ready from stone. With that 3 units can be sent from santarem to E each turn which is faster than even a horse over road can get there. The santarem-E ferry will really help out. Later the ferry can stretch further down the coast. I always overbuild galleons because with the circumnav they can serve as a huge speed increase to a conquest as long as you can hop them down coastline like this.
