SGOTM 08 - Geezers

...
Religious is a bit easy. Honest. Let's go for it. What do you all say. Bit of a practice? We can share tips here and try for Geezers 1 2 and 3, which will be tough given that Sun Tzu Thing and other good players will go for it ...

Map set up. Well, the thing is that I have recently been playing hemisphere maps because I need that for Immortal EQM. Did Liz on Diplo - I can report that, on low sea level it's possible to get a map with contact with the other continents. Which is handy :)

I'm on the trail. . . . but in my first attempt the prey has been accelerating away from me.

Other landmass was not reachable, which meant it was going to be a long game delivering missionaries by caravel.
Finally got them all there (I won't mention the year. I can feel your laughter bouncing off my back as I fight back bitter tears)
But then I ran into the familiar problem of getting all the right people to vote for me.
Hattie had decided to spread X-ity to all her cities, but hadn't adopted X as her rel (or it would have been game over as her huge number of votes would have made her AP resident). Needed to get her to vote for me, but I ran out of gifts to give her, civics to adopt, and she was still only +6.
I had some good friends who voted for me every time, but they only had a small number of votes.
I have stopped for now to lick my wounds and think about it.

I may try again, rather than continue. It would have been an embarassingly late finish. But I suppose any finish is good.

Erik, I started to post a reply here, but decided to move it to the gauntlet thread. I think gauntlets benefit from broad discussion, maybe some other folks will add to it. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear many people are interested in this particular gauntlet.

Yes, any finish is good. It's an Emperor gauntlet, after all. ParadigmShifter is reporting a win in 16xx ... he's not proud of it, but there you go. And I'm blushing over 1000AD

Actually, I just played another, mucked up and finished later than 1000AD. So I've submitted the original effort (hope I've got the settings right ) as a marker.

Which opponents have you picked? And why is Hattie only at +6?

Hmm. I really am a beginner at this. I've played a couple more attempts later on yesterday, and abandoned them both.

For the game in question, I had Hattie, Ram, Gandhi, Asoka, Huayna, Bismarck, Lincoln and Joao - though by the later stages Joao had liberated an off-shore colony as Boudica.

Ram, Huayna and Joao were my closest buddies by the end at +12, +11 and +9.

Hattie, as I said, was +6 :
+1 Years of peace
+2 Open Borders
+3 Like your Civics
Any other bonuses for trade that I'd had earlier had eroded back to 0 by now. She was run-away tech leader, so I lost the ability to trade any to her. She also turned up her nose at any resources I offered. :(

Hattie had been a life-long Confucian, despite the large spread of other religions in her cities. Sadly, Conficianism had never reached me and I don't know of any way to encourage it towards me. :worship::spank::wallbash:

Talking of the other attempts, I haven't yet found a map where I can reach all civs via galleys - and I do choose low sea-level.

The last one I tried was a crazy ride. Found I was alone with Hattie on a hu-u-ge continent. So I spread out. 3 more civs were crowded on a large off-shore island. The rest of the world were on another big continent.
But this one erupted into numerous inter-faction wars so left my head spinning as to how to get votes without alienating half the planet

I've never had a colony liberated in one of my games. Does turning off vassals stop that?

I know it was something introduced with BTS, but I'm not certain if it is tied up with vassals. It doesn't happen often. Only if a civ has an off-shore 'colony', and it decides to grant it independence. You can do it yourself, of course, if you feel it is dragging your empire down, or something. I can't honestly think of a situation where I would ever use it myself.

I did have vassals still turned on in my games, but I'm beginning to wonder if turning it off might simplify a few situations.

By the way . . . I have recorded a win in the G-major 43!
Not a good win. Not even an average win. But a win nonetheless.
It pleased our resident scouser, ParadigmShifter. My finish date was much worse than his .
Now to work on improving that...

But as a team, the chances are much improved. What say you, fellow Geezers?

I am still on gmajor 42. Quite time consuming. Once I am finished that one I might try this. Never played for a religious victory, though.

Ha, I will not even come close to Hawk's date. :) I approached it like a normal game. Took the first map I got and went on with it. I will finish much later if I manage to get it done before the due date.

@AgedOne: Definitely vassals off. I've just posted to that effect on the Gauntlet thread.

Cheers, chook! I've done this in my latest attempt - but am suffering from not finding enough time to play this week :(.
I, too, am starting to post more comments over in the appropriate thread rather than here. (Seems like a pleasant bunch over there. Haven't been flamed once yet :))

Yes. But we don't have to share *everything* with them, do we? This is the Geezers' Gauntlet, after all :mischief:

What news on the succession game? I can't believe people can still be finishing it.

Some of the other teams are quite methodical. Given that a number of teams will finish at a substantially earlier date than us it's difficult to argue that they're wrong. Here's the latest standings to the best of my knowledge:

Code:

Murky are expecting to finish within the next 9 turns.

I just checked back in because I was sure it would have finished by now ... but ...

No Result !!!

Shurely shome penalty for the late finishers ... ?

<Apologies for the British comedy ref there ... >

Murky is done so the first three finishers are in the barn: Murky, CRC and XTeam. We may beat at least one team this time.

By the way, watch out for LTC, he found your comment on their behaviour. Ha and Jesusin will be looking for you :mischief:

@Sam - time to start updating your stats Sam - Chokonuts finished with .826 so we've edged at least one team.

Here's the current status as I see it.

Code:
Team Turn Year Won. Pts Ratio

It's possible that Wonder Bumpkins may end up with the spoon but I'm not making any predictions.

I thought the spoons go to the team that finished with the lowest score - that would look like XTeam. Bronze and Spoons.

It looks like we should beat Bumpkins and Trash - so that puts us in the top ten
