SGOTM 13 - Gypsy Kings

Apologies for not being able to contribute at the end, but it seems I could have done nothing relevant, anyway :-) I wasn't out of bed yet when bc gave up waiting on me!

I'm surprised bc was able to get it done so fast - I'd been feeling a bit guilty for having not set up the rate-limiting Joao attack as well as perhaps I might have. Ideally, one really would like to aim at killing the last two-three opponents at about the same time.

Nods to aj for being right all along that we should go and hit people - and to Griff also who wanted us to do more scouting early. Had we scouted more to find Nidaros and London sooner, and/or chosen the routes for Magellan and Cook more luckily we could have been quite a lot faster, but perhaps not enough for second, even.

Apparently we did have enough access to early hammers to go and capture some real hammers sources, and I will be fascinated to see how Ducks and OSS did it.

I know I've learned heaps about the value and mechanism of early tile-sharing (whether land is scarce or not), and Duckweeding. Thanks, bc for putting those ideas forward!

Good game, and I too have learned a lot. Thanks mabraham for all the simulations and optimizations. I have really learned the value of maximizing my overflow from slavery whips and exactly why and when it is useful. It translated in to a nice win for a gauntlet game and the 10 game challenge. I think I have too hadn't paid as much attention to tile sharing as I should have in my games either.

yes aj was right that we could have rushed them much earlier. I learned the value of catapults. I've always waited for tech advantage (macemen/treb) for wars or very early rushes, but clearly intelligent use of catapults and sizable stacks can win early wars. I haven't read Ducks, but I'm sure they crushed the world with catapults basically.

I think we got lost in the assumption we wouldn't be able to reach the AI easily. Our lack of early exploration did hurt us. And I just didn't believe a war once the AI got metal would be efficient.

Thanks to ron for keeping us organized. And pushing us to better ideas. The fur was clearly a better plan for example.

okay off to read other threads...

Thank you team for an enjoyable game. Most of which I was reading rather than playing, but I still loved it and as with all these SGOTMs I have learnt a lot.

Thanks Griff for your efforts at the start, the test games were a real help and keeping the game summary up to date for a while was nice work. If you're still around and reading this, any chance of continuing with this?

I would especially like to thank bcool, mabraham and ron for playing out the deciding moments, whilst the rest of us dropped out from playing duties for whichever reason. I really like the way you guys play, and articulate your thoughts.

Thorn, I hope you had a good SGOTM experience. dV, hopefully we'll hear more from you next time :)

Nice job guys. Looks like you will finish third easily! Good job.

Well done bc! Very nice finish.:D

I haven't had a chance to look at much of anything, but finishing in 11 turns is awesome!

I too think our strategic error in not valuing exploration highly enough in the early game was our ultimate downfall. I haven't looked at PD's thread yet, but I'd bet they attacked Ragnar early and moved on from there.

Thanks to mabraham and bc for playing to the end, and thanks to everyone else for the contributions they were able to make!

If Griff is still around, please pm or email me.

They settled on the plains hill surprisingly. They found and settled Golden Hills first with much better flying camera analysis and scouting and met many AI and targeted Cathy's GLH first I believe with a large force of cats and axes I believe. I haven't read it very closely but that is what I gathered.

Congratulations on the Bronze Laurels, guys! Nicely done. Beat us by 200 years, and we're (Unusual Suspects) looking at being in tight race for 4th... so you guys really distinguished yourselves from the pack. :goodjob:

That is interesting on the flying camera stuff. I thought I knew what I was looking for, but maybe I need to go back to "flight school"!:crazyeye:

A direct early strike on Moscow would also be a great play.

Yes...about what turn was that?

Great job guys! :goodjob: :king:

Sorry I wan't able to be much involved, but RL is barely giving me time to get an XOTM done here and there (and rather rushed at that).

Probably did better without me, as my recent XOTM results seem to suggest a regression of skill rather than advancement

Great job, GK. Based on the finish dates I've read, it looks like you guys got the bronze by a fair margin. Nicely done. :goodjob:

In our thread, OSS agreed not to use the Flying Camera Trick even though it was stated in the pre-game discussion that it was okay to use. FCT is obviously a bug and is not intended to be used. Rather than having everyone spend time in pilot school (and it would be a lot for me because I've never done it), I hope that we can agree not to use it in SGOTM and xOTM games going forward even though there is no way to police it.

Now, most importantly, when can OSS have bcool back? :D

Been away from Civfanatics for a while now. Congrats guys on the third place win! I wish I could have been more involved but then we probably wouldn't have finished in third place. :mischief:
Thanks to adrian, da_Vinci, bcool, mabraham, Ronnie1 and Grifftavian for making my first experience with SGOTM a great one. :goodjob:

Hi to all the Gypsy Kings,

Ozbenno PM'd me regarding an amalgamation of teams. It looks like we will be short a couple of players so seems like a good idea to me.

Now as for a new team name I think I'd have to leave that to wiser heads than mine. :)

"Nutty Misfit Gypsy's"...."Misfit Gypsy Nuts"

Possibilities maybe....
