SGOTM 14 - Xteam

In our case in this game we're not actually completing against the AI, but against the other teams, so advancing the AI in our game has potential (hopefully) to advance us further and hopefully increase the pace at which we finish the game and so give us a better chance of finishing ahead of the other teams. I think!

Now that we are certain the Oz is reachable with Galleon, i am certain advancing up the tech ladder is the wrong path. One of the teams that were posting saves has stopped and their last graph is telling that they may be done. The race is for us against others for 3rd or 4th spot and I would like to make it 3rd. Our power is not high and that concerns me.

These good teams know that once you have 100-200 cuiras, the whole economy can go to hell since only one unit per turn is disbanded and as long as you take cities there is hope to finish the game sooner with continual strikes. We really have all the unit types we need to finish the game. This is why I have been pushing for Police state and slavary for a long time.

Seeing the AI leaders without Gunpowder at this stage leads me to the same conclusion as Htadus. Steel will cement it for us if we can move quickly and get to the other AI before they get to Mil Trad or Rifles.

I'm thinking we need another Army to head for Zulu land! :hammer:

In those three turns we've taken Ujjain, Lodose, Bangalore and Hyderabad, and got half way to Steel. Oh, and if we were conducting elections we'd be out on our ears in the biggest landslide in history - the people are not happy campers. Killing off India will help a lot in that I hope.

I'll continue in the morning - say in about 11 hours from now. Perhaps another three or four turns will see India dead and another Viking city as well and the death of India will be a good time for me to hand it over. I'll post a full report then.

How are we doing with another GP?

I decided to try for a non-scientist in NK, despite the lower chances. The reason I chose this is because the GP in Harappan was 25 turns away and I knew that with increasing unhappies, that would slow further (As it has done already in three turns). I figured, waiting 30 turns for a GP was not worth the wait - we needed it sooner than than or not at all for another golden age. Hence I decided to go with CP's suggestion to crank it out of NK - I put on an engineer and about four merchants and it was five turns when I started those last three turns. I think it's down to two turns now despite growing unhappies even in NK. The percentage for a scientist should be down to around 70% by the time the GP comes. If we get lucky we get the GA, if not we work out what to do with two scientists, but I figured that couldn't be worse than waiting 30 turns for a GP.

Hence we are now about two turns from a GP, which will be about 70% scientist, 18% engineer, 12% merchant I would guess by the time it comes.

I also had a disappointment right in the first turn as I immediately finished the fort south of Ayodhya and realised the boats wouldn't go through it. It was then I remembered that forts have to be within your cultural boundaries for ships to use them as canals! :rolleyes: At that stage Ayodhya still had four turns to go in rioting and therefore it was four turns until the canal could be used so I was annoyed, but after that, things have gone well with four cities falling in three turns. I figured the units at Ayodhya could walk to Patiliputra just as well as sit in Ayodhya doing nothing for four turns, so they are now doing that. I hope to take Lahore with the help of galleons with the forces which have just taken Hyderabad - I was able to rush pretty much straight to Hyderabad with Currasiers after taking Bangalore, because there wasn't a big stack defending it. Anyhow - more details about that when I write my report and give you my BUFFY log later.

I should be able play some more turns in about an hour or so. I'll see how far I get - at least I will go the two turns to when the GP is available, and if I'm enthusiastic I might go another couple of turns after that to the complete destruction of India. Then again if I want to consult about what to do with the GP's I might just upload the save. Either way I'll put a full report here.

OK – another two seemingly endless turns, another two cities captured (Tonsberg and Pataliputra), a lucky GA, :D and we need to make some decisions about civics because the empire is ravaged by the non-physical effects of war – the economy is laboring and the people are very annoyed. In all though, the last five turns have yielded six cities, and we have hammered Raggie stacks repeatedly as well. His power is surely dropping fast. :hammer:

We can swap to Police State now (Several happies in most cities from reduction of WW), and a switch to slavery at the same time would allow us to whip some unhappy faces away. We should also consider the merits of vassalage/free religion versus our current theocracy/nationalism. I think drafting has run its course for us now and the new combination would give us an extra happy for free religion with the same +2 experience points, except coming from vassalage. Hopefully the cheaper free religion (compared to theocracy) and the free units of vassalage would offset the more expensive maintenance of vassalage…

In case it has any bearing on who plays the next sets, I am going out of town and out of contact from the 29th through the 4th, and have too much RL to deal with to play before I leave (though I'll still be able to contribute to the discussion). I should be able to play fairly soon after I return.

No - our economy was not really in a position to support it if we wanted to get to steel. I was using high science to get steel and losing money very fast. We currently lose money with all sliders set to zero - though now with the golden age that may no longer be true.

I think civic changes (particularly Police State) will help a lot with that now though.

Having looked at the save, the logistics of going after Shaka next seem a bit difficult. Think we'd need another fort built next to a former Viking spoke city spoke city and the city to come out of anarchy before we could get loaded galleons in place. On the other hand, we can continue to move on Rags even as we take Lahore. Probably want to move units from India campaign toward Rags eastern-most cities and proceed east to west, so that forces will be close to Shaka when we're finished with the Vikings.

We can load three cats onto galleon in Hyderabad and 2 more onto a nearby galley and land them next to Lahore next turn, if it's going to be a long siege.

Need to get a galleon(s) and frigate to the Tonsberg area soon to pick up trebs and other 1-move units and advance them toward Rockilde and Uppsala.

Yes, mind you, the way Mansa and Shaka have picked up Military Tradition, Gunpowder and Replaceable parts all in about the last five turns is scary. The longer we leave them, the more rifles they will array against us, which will slow us down a bit. We need to hit them absolutely as soon as it is practical to do so.

They just landed this turn from the galleon that is nearby there. Lahore has walls so it will be slow. Bangalore was likewise a long seige. Hyderabad didn't need a seige due to lack of serious defenders and several other cities I took were short seiges due to lack of walls, but Lahore will be like Bangalore unless we want to throw attackers at it partly bombarded. That might save a couple of turns taking Lahore but it will cost us in units.

Yes, more seige units to Lahore would be good.

There are five galleons near Lahore (staying together to discourage attacks by that fleet of six caravels that fled Pataliputra before we took it) Some of them can head quickly towards Tonsberg we now have three frigates in those waters, but two are just arriving - at least one should head towards Tonsberg to provide serious cover against the caravel fleets. Haven't had a caravel fleet try to take on one of the frigates yet!

As I said above we need to think about how to hit him hard and fast, but CP has rightly pointed out the logistical problems. It would be nice to know if and where a "stack of doom" is located. I would want to hit several cities at once, but in splitting up the attack force like that, we would be vulnerable to counterattack, and having cities retaken if we didn't know where to expect the counter-attack from. He has knights and maces, soon no doubt some muskets and it won't be too long before there are rifles on the scene I fear. I would want to hit several cities before then.

The problem is doing the "several cities" bit before taking out a lot more of Raggie. I think we should now try hitting Raggie in several spots - I creamed about 30-40 Viking units in my turn set - he can't have an inexhaustible supply... He's got to be weakening by now surely? Once we've hit several more of Raggie's cities, we can send an army into Zululand.

Yes, I think you're right if we do Mansa/Shaka and Genghis over properly we won't need to hit Monty/Gandhi. The problem may come because Mansa/Shaka are friendly with Monty/Gandhi - we might get them whether we want them or not.

Oh - try to keep that privateer in Gandhi's territory moving towards the Emerald City - that's what it's there for. Unfortunately it might not survive the voyage - it's already wounded. The Caravel heading east at the top of the map is backup for gazing at the Emerald City should the privateer not survive Gandhi's waters.
