SGOTM 17 - Fifth Element

I think that we need to focus on a MM, WE, Cat war to take over Qin and Sury ASAP. The race to Lib at the expense of taking that land sooner than later, just to get a free tech that when we need it would take 3 - 4 turns to research seems like a poor choice.

If we really think we can trade Philo for both techs then sure give it a try but we need to be pretty confident that we can get at least one of them otherwise it is a needless distraction at this point. Sure this game is gonna drag late into later time periods but we shouldn't just play builder and plan to wipe everyone at the last minute with tanks or paras. We need to continue on the warpath.

We need to continue on the warpath.
I was thinking if you was still alive. Glad to see you are :)

Well, as i said, Philo is a bet. If we're successful we gain 3 techs at the cost of 1. If not, we lose some 15 turns. Which are not peanuts. Can we assume that at least one between Sury and Qin won't research it and that we can have 2 techs at the cost of 1? Can we be so unlucky to have both researching a tech which usually the AI research only until late?

Again, it's a bet. We can build solid catapults, archers and structures in the meantime and recover our disastrous economy.

I'm for taking that bet. On my head... and on Folket's

I mostly agree about Lib. If we can win the race once we have Engineering and Guilds, good. Otherwise this is not a Space race.

If we feel to have the strenght to start an elepult war with some axe and HA in support, we can do it. I've tried a war with an absurd number of cats recently and i can assure that you can use even archers to mop up. WEs are better, you need less catapults.

I used this tactic: 12 cats, 5-6 bombard, 2-3 die, the others survive. Take the city and move on. Reinforcements arrive, again 12. before the injured are haealed, move to the next target and use the injured to bombard, the full helath to attack. Pause to heal and wait more reinforcements. Rinse and repeat. Without HA or knights with flank attack it's even easier.

Yep just had little to say and lots of other things to do.

Me too, on your head if we are wrong but as my approved plan if successful :)

I love this military plan. By the time we get those units in place we should have recovered the economy enough to support it.

Suryavarman is researching something expensive since he has not gained any techs. We know Qin is researching guilds right now.

I run the test. It seems like they are willing to trade philosophy and 25 gold for either machinery or feudalism. It still sounds like a good idea to me. Perhaps I can get philosophy in three turn with some micro.

So shall I go ahead and play four turns?

It seems like we get the first tech for 25 gold and philosophy and the second for 130 gold and philosophy. We have literature to trade to Khmer so I think we should give him that tech instead of gold. Perhaps we can get some gold from him instead.

I prefer Djenne for the heroic epic btw.

Why not just save up gold for 8 turns and see if we get a GS from Aachen, then bulb Philosophy? Do we have any other use for a GS other than Golden Age (not very useful now IMO) or settle (still not very useful). I wouldn't put in beakers unless we are sure about the trade value. (So until the ingame F4 shows that they are willing to trade Machinery)

Djenne for HE <- good, but then we should farm the hill rice

They are already willing to trade for machinery. They have been for ten turns.

Sorry. I remembered wrong.

But then what will we do with the GS? It looks like we would spend our hard-earned money on a tech that we could trade for in 8 turns anyway. The next bulb option is paper, which is not that useful. Besides we could really use that money when researching Engineering.

It is just a little more risky. At least now we know Qin is busy researching guilds. Do we dare to wait 4 more turns? Which may end up as 11 more turns.

I'm fine with waiting for the GS. But it is not obvious what is the best option here.

Can we agree on capturing the next Hades city?

I looked at Aachen. It will be a 75% chance on a scientist in 14 turns or about 55% chance in 8.

I would wait. It's still more likely that we get a GS, and with Philo researched, it won't really have anything to do. Maybe we could give something to Qin for good relations?

Sure. Take it ASAP.

Finally, i was afraid that my edited comment has been lost, seen some post. As the situarion is is Augsburg in 21 turns @44%. Aachen is building the colossus, so it will be polluted. We can't count on a GPerson short term.

So, Folket, take Hades 2. Our swords are obsolete and a long way to the ferry point. Use them and try to save the CR3, just for affection :). But bring an axe first to protect the stack. Build a chariot to use for scouting, possibly C1.

Go for Philo and hope. Quick!
good luck!

Aachen already has the colossus. It can work max specs to get the next GP in 8 turns. Even if we research Philo, we should get this GPerson, it will take time for Mainz to take over GP production. A scientist could be used for a golden age, and the others would be very useful (GE for Engi bulb, GM for money, GSpy for mission...)

Very important: focus our EP on either Sury or Qin! Whichever looks like a better techer. Or the one we attack first to do revolts.

Played two turns. Meet Japan.

He is backwards as is expected with his personality.

This is the path behind China btw.

I do not think this changes anything to us but I want to hear the team.

I would probably avoid the great spy. Yes let us put all EPs into Qin.
