SGOTM 18 - BadCiv

Ok I played to the end of turn 30 except for worker 1's movement! The settler is being double-whipped out! maybe worker 1 should chop or start farming in the overlap between city 1 and city 2! yeesh!

we're separated by a 1-tile ocean strip from Goldmember. the railroad circling the map is patchy and stupid. Maybe send the warrior north and the fembot can double back to the northwest, maybe see how joao is spreading...

also writing will finish next turn so open borders with khan! bye!

great work mister scumbag.

next up to play turns is fizzy. so far, we've planned to build (whip almost immediately?) a granary in the capital, and settle 1 SE from the choke. future plans are to grow some, get aesthetics (do we want AH before aesthetics?), and REX some more. thoughts anyone?

I was thinking that it's become very important to explore the areas around the chokepoint, so we should turn the fembot southwest immediately. Everything to our east is a crummy desert, so we need to explore around (and maybe even prepare for war with) Joao. We Must Secure An Existence For Groovy Swingers, Baby.

if we wanted to go to war with joao early (which we *could* do, we have the economy and production for it), we'd either need horses + horseback riding or construction + iron or construction + horseback riding. looking at our map:

i see 5 potential spots for horses (barring something barked up like desert horses or floodplains horses); four of them are around our capital and the other one would be at our chokepoint pigs city. i think there's a pretty compelling argument that we *do* have horses *somewhere*, since this is sort of like a custom always-war map (with a special chokepoint and everything). same with iron, although iron could very easily be somewhere in the desert. there's also an argument for trying to break out; we only have spots for maybe a half dozen cities, and joao will go crazy expanding to every point he can. however, if we take him out we also lose a buffer between dr evil and ourselves, and we'll basically cement joao in dr evil's block if we're not able to finish him off. we'd also either lose or greatly endanger our chance of getting the parthenon and the shewedagon paya by veering off our tech path.

what do y'all think? could spice up the game a bit... in either case I propose we micromanage a bit less heavily to keep the game rollin a little bit faster...

How feasible would it be to deter Aesthetics long enough to pick up AH and Wheel? Wheel is 60:science:, AH is 100:science:. We're putting out 19:science: per turn at the moment, which we can hopefully increase once we open boarders with Genghis. With the overflow(which is looks like it'll have a fair chunk of) from Writing, we should be at 5~ turns for AH and 3 for Wheel. The question is if we can afford the 8 turns to pick those up. The AI doesn't go after Aesthetics very often so I wouldn't worry about losing Paya.

It's a real shame that our special unit isn't until navy seal (although could be useful for storming goldmember i guess)

I think you'll have to skip me this round of turns. work is crazy lately so it'll take me a while to actually get around to playing turns and writing up game stuff and I think the game should keep on moving. maybe john s should take over instead?

AS for Joao, he's an about settling but he'll pretty chill if we want to try and get along with him. We can get +4 relations from both fave civic (hereditary rule, which we'll both be in for a while) and from same religion AND he won't declare at pleased. but peace should probably only be considered if we can secure land and a future for our groovy children outside the mountains.

im not sure if borsche is interested, he's only posted in this thread twice... although he's of course welcome to take the turns if he wants to! otherwise, i guess it's back to me then, and you guys can join in on the next rotation...

as for war, my personal feeling is that we probably do need to war him early, but not necessarily this early... perhaps a war at construction would be good. delaying the war might also net us some more wonders; he's due for a great engineer at turn 50 from the hagia sophia, so there's always the chance that he'll build one of the aesthetics wonders for us if he has aesthetics by then. (via a trade from us (hopefully not the statue of zeus!)) however, I don't think it would hurt us too much to sideline to AH if its really only a 5 turn tech. we can decide where else to go from there.

i'm assuming we'll also want our capital to pump another settler soon, maybe once it reaches size 3? where do we want to settle next? 1W of the copper? seems like a great spot and copper will be very helpful defensively, we'll just need to get a garrison up right away in case goldmember decides to send a galley over to wreck our "Stuff".

Next city is a debate between New Flood Central and anything forward towards Joao. Considering that it's Joao of all AIs, I'd have to lean towards settling towards him before the Portugese Settler Machine comes online. We need the copper ASAP but I believe it can wait for the 4th city.

There's a LOT of good stuff to the west, and I shudder to think what Joao could get up to with all that cattle. I think we need to at least establish a foothold outside the mountains, post-haste. We can always snap up the bronze later, when peace seems ready to fail.

Note also that there seems to be a mountain pass just south of the bananas and wheat -- it could be important for us to secure some surface area there.

hmmm, well actually, now that I look at your screenshot, I notice that Joao's lands are utterly swathed in Jungle. maybe it would be best to let him and his Expansive Hagiasophia-amped workers cut all that junk down for us. Genghis' land, on the other hand, looks very nice, at least as far as we can see. Genghis is known for being a ridiculous unit spammer, but also for being an obstinante farktard that doesn't like trading with anyone and very easily gets behind in tech. Maybe we can bribe him into war with Joao early, and then, when he gets behind in tech but maybe conquers some of Joao's cities for us, we can swoop in with more advanced units (trebs, for example, or macemen + cats) and just clean his clock.

right now i can only see 5 city spots for us, although we me might be able to build some galleys and invade goldmember's lands to the south. his city should have either the GLH or the Colossus, either of which would be a pretty nice pickup for us...

lol I just realized I can't play turns until tuesday because my gf took my laptop with civ 4 on her trip to new york. do we really not have ANYBODY else who can play turns ???
