Shiptypes and Eras

Thinking of the original Pirates, the timeframe made not only for different town nationalities, new towns, renamed towns, but also for...

... new ship types.

Right, no Dutchmen in 1560 - this Era is no longer part of the new Pirates, but another major change took place in 1640:

The Frigate appeared, replacing the Fast Galleon as the premier pirate warship.

So, how is it in the new PIRATES?

For Example:
Ships of the Line? Can I expect to get one in 1660?

Are there other restrictions? Sloops seem to appear right from the start, listen up ye landlubbers, I think they did not appear before 1620 in the old Pirates.

Any more things you might know? Have you seen Ships of the Line in 1600 or whatever, post it! Only reward: Enlightenment. ;)

I'm currently playing two games... One in 1640 and the other in 1660.

In 1640, I saw a ship named "New Warship." This new warship was a War Galleon (IIRC).
Now, in 1660, when I saw the SOTL, it also had "New Warship" next to it.
That leads me to believe that SOTLs did not appear in 1640. I may be wrong, but for now, that's all I've got.

I think this is really a pity - I particulary loved playing the early eras on the c64, because I had to rely on other ships.
I just don't see any reason to use a pinnace in the game when sloop type ships are available. Sure - I could restrict myself to using one, but it just doesn't feel right, if everyone else is sailing the carribean with sloops...

Does anyone know if things like that could be modded?

Was wondering about that a few days ago myself.
Checked Google for
first frigate
They were arround much earlier than you would think and the SOL was around before that.

It would not be historically inaccurate to have a Frigate seen during 1600's, although highly improbable.

Have little use for the Pinnace.

I prefer the War Canoe!! Seems to turn and sail just a little bit quicker.

Montalban never knows what is hitting him. Those pesky Frigates fall like flies.
You can easily steal Treasure Ships out from under escorts. When you do not feel like fighting, you can skip out on a battle soo easily.

Guess I'll give it a go - sounds interesting - allthough I don't have any problem outmaneuvering any square rigged ship with a royal sloop - and getting away has never been a problem with that too.

The problem is, that using the same flagship for a few campaigns is way repetitive, but I still can't see any good reason why I should use anything else. I'm just using a fully upgraded ship of the line (started a swashbuckler camapign as dutch in 1680 and got one immediately after sailing out for the first time....), but I admit I only use it for the variety - no match compared to a royal sloop.

Isn't it way annoying to reduce an enemy crew with so few cannons? Mmmh - will have to find out...

You use canon?
I use Cotton, Copper, sometimes Iron, and board baby board.

Almost never use the canons except for insults. Although they can trick the AI into turning, even when you have no chance of hitting them.
