Should I get Civ IV?

How much of a change do you want? Civ IV is a BIG change. Conquests is not. If you just want a little spicing up, then I'd probably wait on Civ IV, but if you really want to explore a strange new world, Civ IV is just the ticket. Then again, I'm a Civ IV player these days.

T.A. Jones, why do you always advertise Balancer Reloaded?
Hey AlCosta15 I like the Balancer as a example cause it sticks with the original rules and no Fantasy elements are added so its friendly to those like me who want a new expierence thats the closest thing to the original while still making considerable expansions to the epic game through new additions introduced though extended and added eras. Its also a example of complete work like a store bought exp, no missing pedia stuff I apprieciate the work that went into it I guess, but I have no shares in it or family ties if thats what you meant :)

Civ 4 not addicting?? It's like crack, I loaded up my recent game last night "Just to check it out real quick" Well that turned into another 1:30 hrs of play and several "one more turns!"

if you want a social life, don't get cIV.
My mariage is in ruins now ;)

cIV is a strategy game. Really!
If you like to think things over, it's really good.
Religions are a good addition, promoting options for units make a really varied game, collateral damage (though a bit overpowered maybe) is a nice thing, victory conditions are well balanced, ...

Also, i found Civ III games boring. hours of play for nothing new (strategically) made me close the game forever. It's still on my hard drive, but since i have cIV, i never lost a minute in Civ III.

Even if you don't get Civ4, IMHO you should consider c3c.

For the "regular" game, Civ4 wins hands down. Civ3 is just the same rehash every time: settle land like crazy, conquer first neighbor with iron/horse based units, build armies and artillery and finish off everyone else. At higher levels it's all about tedious MM, building tons of crappy, tiny cities. No wonders, no infrastructure, no culture. Bleh.

Civ4 offers multiple ways to win, reduces MM and offers all sorts of strategic possibilties without the need for crutches like armies and artillery. My first win on Civ4 was by spaceship whereas the Civ3 end game is so boring, I never could be bothered to finish a space win. It was just so much easier to wipe out everyone. In fact, even wiping everyone out gets overly repetious and dull so my last several games of C3C I just stopped playing when it was obvious I was going to win anyway.

That being said, there are a lot of really fun mods of there for C3C and even the scenarios that come with C3C are pretty good. Civ4 mods are still experiencing their growing pains. Over time this will surely change and given that Civ4 is far more moddable, I suspect it will greatly surpass Civ3, especially in the area of scenario events, which were inexplicably left out of Civ3.

So for the time being, there's still some life left in old Civ3, but the game is clearly on life support.

CivIV is a good game - and this is coming from someone who doesn't play it 24/7. I play it only every once in a while, but when i do i tend to really get into it. It's great if you have a lot of time to play, and i'm gearing up for some big games with some friends soon. That should be great fun. CivIV with friends and a long, idle day = good times.

I'd get it if you don't mind spending the money. Why not check Ebay for a 2nd hand copy?

I bought CivIV about 2 months ago at target for $50. Wait another month and it SHOULD be a bit lower. Its addictive. Easy worldbuilder, fun gameplay, animated battles, 18 civilizations, and a few scenarios. Thats what comes with the game.look around these CivIV forums and find some descriptions on the game, and maybe find a mod you like that will jump you to buying the game. I was stupid enough to buy at target without the expansion, so just get a good price on the expansion. I have been playing for 2 months and not one piece of bboredom yet.
