A friend of mine used to play Master of orion 3, and I was wondering, is this one of those games that is just to good to pass up?

I hear it can be ok if you mod it up quite a bit.

I'd recommend Sword of the Stars instead, personally. You can get it plus expansions on GamersGate, Impulse, or Steam pretty inexpensively and it's quite worthwhile, especially with the expansions.

Moo3 too good to pass up. I think the answer is no. It has many flaws, some of which can be over come or corrected with the patch and some of the user mods. You can further tweak a few things to your taste with little effort.

I just put in another long attempt to like this game, but only moved from my original it sucks to it is not terrible. IF you do get it, make sure it is cheap, go to the Atari site and gets some of the mods and read some of the threads.

I will say I did enjoy the space combat, but that is not enough to recommend the game to others. It is also a very complex learning curve game.

To start with it doesn't even work correctly so you must get mod(s) for it.
I've been looking into mods but the big mod that has had the most development (and it looks like is still being developed) does some things I don't care for so I'm going to have to cobble together parts I want from it and other mods.
It's kind of like buying a beat up old car because you want to restore it. The only reason I have the patience to work on it is I played it when I didn't know it was screwy so I know enough about it to change things. Would you want to stark with a know to be shoddy product? If no, then skip it. When I get around to playing with the mods I've been looking at I think it will be less playing than preforming a postmortem.
Unless you can get it for a price that's less than you would consider throwing away, skip it.
I haven't played Galactic Civilizations II, or Sins of a Solar Empire but I've heard good things. You should probably try them if you really want something in the space empire genre.

Let me slightly upgrade my prior position. I have made some further modifications to some of the things that most annoyed me and now find the game not bad. That is a slight step up from not terrible.

I only post the improvement to be fair and with a small homage to several people that put in a lot of effort in correcting the game and also help me speed up relearning.

IMO Avoid. MOO1 is a timeless ultra-classic. MOO2 is pretty good too. MOO3 was an abortion, far worse than I even thought it could have been. They completely missed the entire fun factor of the original.
