Sorry, being afraid of a rl meet because of stalkers is silly. You're just as likely to go to the supermarket and get stalked home as going to a rl meet of civfanatics. This is not a new idea or anything. Almost every gaming community I've found online has real world meets from time to time. I've never heard of any problems with stalkers or anything. It's just nice to get to see the face behind the text from time to time. And it lets you talk about your oddities. I know you all want to get off the computer and talk to everyone about civilization, but most people you know in real life don't care or you'll feel like a dork talking about it. But at a RL meet among civfanatics you have nothing to fear and they all would love to hear your thoughts.

ControlFreak, I entirely agree that it would be nice to have a forum for players who have 'bonded' thus forming a cliquey forum within the greater forum. I'm a member of the SomethingAwful forums and this has always been the case there and works very well. :)

I think that if there is to be a new forum it should be set so that we have one gotm forum for discussing gotm games only. This could be set by cracker so that normal poster cannot post new topics, thus reducing the possibility of people posting spoilers ahead of time. The other forum could be for general stategy stuff and OT discussion.

In my mind this system would increase the usefulness of the second forum thus making it more viable. There will inevitably be some thread duplication, but it would at least allow posters the liberty to direct their threads at the gotm players, or the community at large. At the end of the day, setting up a new forum won't cost anything (at least no more bandwidth than is otherwise used) and might actually make the mods' jobs easier!

Viewing the post so far sort of indicates to me how this new forum/thread would operate.

It would be a more relaxed medium loosely based around the GOTM. It could be used to point out and discuss new strategy articles, discuss a past game event (let's say "nuclear Terraforming" for example ;) ), throwing down challenges (let's say "lowest score victory" challenge :D ), commenting on and recognising quickly iomproving players, whatever.

Personally I do not venture too far from the GOTM (Call it my second home), so I voted to pop in every now and then for a cuppa.
