Should we consider pop rushing?

This thread will likely stir a bit of controversy. I don't pop rush very much myself, which might be one reason I do poorly on higher levels, but it's still a valid question. We have a limited number of cities which equals limited shield production, and only one luxury right now which means we have population limits beyond which we will see rioting or loss of income.

So, do we consider this? Is it too politically incorrect in a demogame setting? Or does it fit the actual government we're in, and we can live with it?

Yes, when really needed pop rushing is an excellent option. What is the pop to shield? ratio

1 citizen = 20 shields (providing you already have some shields stored)

But you can rush no more than half your citizens at the same time, so to rush a 40 shield improvement (with at 1 or more shields stored, but less than 10) you either need 4 citizens losing 2, or you short rush - rush a 20 shield build, change then rush again to get the 40 shield build that you actually want which needs 3 citizens losing 2.

Watch out for unhappiness though.

I've never done it before, I always hate how ticked off the remaining citizens get after the projects done, I could easily live with that though, it's the unhappiness after conscription that I always hated, (So I modified it down a bit!:)

So im not much use here as I've never done it before and rather hate doing it, but this isn't the part that i'm good at, I'll leave it to the experienced players to decide :goodjob:

Our cities have pretty good shield production individually, so I don't think pop rushing would be worth it (the pop rushing before revolution that I always forget about doing may be worth it, though). And pop rushing to try to keep population low so the cities don't get unhappy is contradictory. Is one citizen and 20 turns of one more unhappy citizen worth 20 shields? It may be in specific cases.

With Republic on the way, pop rushing will only be on the table for 20-30 turns more. So I feel we should ride our despotic lifestyle without using it.

Using it to cure production woes? Not really. We are in dire need of nothing unless we get attacked. Only then could I see pop rushing a Horseman or two.

Using it to cure growth issues? Our governors can time a worker build to halt growth, which would be more beneficial to the community.

All Augean Stables citizens have the right to live. However, if we are under attack by enemy forces, I will be foreced to work people to death to outfit Hoplite units in time to defend my city. I will not rush a project or whip citizens to outfit a millitary battalion in times of peace.

i rarely pop rush in despotism or governments when you have to kill citizens. i prefer paying the citizens. witht the GL and us getting techs, we should be making a pretty penny soon, we can use our massive gold stores on improvements in republic.

For Priapos, poprushing is a mickey mouse strategy mainly applied by serbs and russians, with no clue for economics, social insight and so on. I loathe poprush proponents, not only for a lack of AI humanism, but also for math skills and strategic planning.

shoot them all.
