There's bound to be oil there, and we can deny it to other civs. We could have one of our "lesser cities" rush a few settlers and/or carevel. We could fit 3 cities here, BTW.

if we do, take the forest so we can have the benifits of the whale

True, but here is another question. What should we do if there is no Oil in that Island?

Yes, if we don't settle there, the English or Indians will.

No; what good will it do to us? And against what cost ?

A chance of oil, while the chance of oil being present on our continent is XXXX times larger.

If we do, we have to be lucky to find the correct spot for this city blindly, to get it into our first tiles. Else we'd have to build cultural buildings (slow or if cashrushed expensive); thus neglecting defense. And if we are lucky enough to have it within the borders, we are vulnerable to attack. I hope I don't have to explain that defense is either non-existant or too espensive.

Yes and no

Here is why I think...YES

Pretty soon we will own all the continent, might as well take the island. We want to get it before the Other Civs, but we will attack once we get to war with that civ. Also it might have oil. We have 50/50 chance, Oil or no Oil, that is the question.

Here is why I think...NO

The cities that are going to be on there are going to be small. Might be no oil. Slow production, so not many military units. Can be easily attacked....

Those are my reasons....

No, by time we rush the needed units, and by time they reached the island, it is likely it will already be settled.

Defense would not be a problem, we are closing in on the cheap riflemen era, and if we wait a turnchat untill we rush them, the cities would have enough defense. The AI is never good at naval attacks, and the most we are likely to see is two calvary/infantry.
