I was wondering what is the literacy rate in Phoenatica? Because if it is lower that 90% we should take on a NLP (National Literacy Program) to improve it and bulid Libraries and Universities. So what do other citizens think? from this to
Hmmm.. lower than 90%, that's a bit high, even in most well read nations, 90% is still an awfull lot of people reading. I do encourage a national literacy program, regardless of the porcentage. ...it is my experience that porcentages are never good advisors.
We should build libraries and universities, especially in those cities close to bordering nations.
Our literacy rate is 64%, ranked 5th. Many of our major money producing cities have libraries, and either have universities or have them in queue. Border cities I also support these improvements to defend against culture flips, however building out there takes more than building near the core. The libraries are included in the CAP program (Cultural assult), I see no problem with building more, esp. if we're going for space victory.
5th?! now that's low... it should be a priority, to boost the literacy rating withing, I dunno, 2 presidential terms? A great nation is often judged by the amount of reading it's people do.
We have a lot of readers in Phoenatica. We just have the largest population so the percentages look "off". We even have record numbers of visitors to the Great Library. We are a scientific nation and are always striving to be numero uno in literacy. I look forward to rearch labs in a majority of our cities.
Please realize our size has greatly increased in the last few turns, and we still have a bunch of new Greeks to educate. Not to mention you can have a Library and University in every city and still not have a high lit rate, if you don't give it enough time. but I do think more research should be put into exactly How many cities don't have libraries or Universities.
Right, I keep forgetting that with each new conquest you have to build in those cities almost from scratch.
Just how big has the Republic grown in the last few turns?
That's another thing, if the greeks (or any other culture for that matter) aren't asimilated promptly into our culture, they may want to return to their original one. (It's happened to me before)
well, not large enough to justify the low amount. looking at the statistics, before we took anything, we had a lit rate of 66% so it took it down 2%, not really big. As I said research should be done into what cities don't have libraries and universities.
Anyway, it's not that important. We are doing very well in science and have heaps of money, why waste production on libraries and unis?? Unless they are in border cities to increase culture! Rather, we should invest in our military.
why WASTE production on libraries and unis?? (my emphasis)
The very glory of our nation depends on those libraries and universities. And the opinion of Almightyjosh will not influence me, and wherever I can I shall build, rush and even over ride governmental queues to produce them. our military is soon to be the greatest in the planet, and we might choose to go for a cultural victory in which case these help very well. To add to this we also will have to spend less to get the same output for science. Tis a monstrous thing you've stated, and have earned my enmity for a time.
I have to agree that the low literacy rate is explainable. We just conquered the majority of Greece, and by no means is that a small number of cities. When the new cities are secured, we should build libraries, etc. Don't overlook Reseach Labs, as they'll soon be available also.
I support this. A nation cannot claim to be fully "developed" until most of its people (read: >75%) can know how to fully read and write. Libraries and Universities will also help us in our science, and allow us to cut back and rake in more gold, which is always a good thing.
Also note that libraries and universities give us more culture than temples and cathedrals, and with new lands to be secured we will need it.
I am strongly in favor of the implementation of literacy-rate raising.
