Sick of Corruption

Folks,

I am fairly new to Civ3, but have played Civ2 to death and back to life again! I must admit to taking my old Civ2 strategies to Civ3 and most appear to struggle a bit. What is really hacking me off though is the corruption. How do I limit it to some reasonable level? Even with Democracy a city far away from my capital is reduced to 1 shield per turn production. Even if I build a Courthouse (80 turns!), nothing much changes (perhaps up to 2 shields per turn). Do I need an alternative civilisation? (I have tried the French, Egyptians so far and they appear to have much the same attributes when it comes to corruption).

Any advice would be much appreciated

Axl

Live with it. It's made so that a huge empire will not totally dominate a smaler empire.

Yeah, as Tomoyo said you have to live with it. Have you got the Conquest add? If so you can irrigate everything in those outlying cities, let them grow to size 6+ and turn citizens into policemen/policewomen or engineers.

And where is the fun in that!!! So are you saying that what I have found is the way it is then?

Yup! Stay small and beautiful ;)

* Forbidden Palace will help you to some extent.

But you must tell us what you are playing: vanilla, PTW or C3C?

Cheers "thetrooper", I have not got the Conquest add-on. That might help solve my problem. Does it change anything else - I read that it adds a few Wonders into the bargain.

OK! You play vanilla then. Build the FP. If you manage to get a leader hurry it. You will then get a new core of highly productive cities.

As for Conquest, yes there are a few new Wonders for you. :)

So does the FP act as another Capital in terms of corruption for the cities around it? I treid that without much success to be honest? I thought that it only acted in the city you built the FP in

Cheers all. I will try that and let you know how it works - expect a pause of a week or so!! That is what happens with you have 2 little ones under 3!!!

In Vanilla and PTW the FP works better than a second capitol due to the "rings" effect for the distance rank bug/exploit/feature.

For example, If the closest city to your capitol is at distance 5, then any city at 5 or less distance from your FP will be at rank 1. This can be exploited by placing your Capitol very far away from any other cities (say distance 20 to nearest city that you own). This works best when you can use a Great Leader to rush the capitol in a remote location.

Edit: GOTM considers the "remote palace" exploit an illegal action. The HOF allows this action though....

Edit 2: These don't work in C3C as they revised the corruption model.

When I first started playing civ 3 I also got annoyed with totally corrupt cities and avoided building them. I now like to think that a corrupt city far from my capital is one less productive city for the AI, so I build as many cities as possible.

It doesn't really matter if your outer cities are useless as long you have a productive core.

And if you *really* need to far away cities to be somewhat productive then try Communism. Your core will suffer a little more corruption but your far away cities will actually be worth something.

If you don't need the far flung cities to do much then just leave 'em that way and stay Demo.

I have just downloaded the 129f updates, so will see how that impacts of the corruption stakes.

Cheers for everyones comments. Great forum by the way - I can lose several weeks just going through the stuff!

There is a solution if you are willing to edit the rules of the game. I too thought that the incredible corruption was ruining the game, so I went into the editor, and under improvements there are a whole bunch of boxes you can click for each one. One of the options is "reduce corruption" or something like that. I clicked this box for things like the temple, cathedral, library, university, bank, etc. What this does is, the more of these units you build in a city, the less corrupt it is. So over time, as you build more improvements, your outlying cities become useful. And it helps the AI as much as you, so it's not really cheating. One thing it does do is some civilizations end up with a ridiculous amount of money, and technology probably moves faster too.

Just wanted to say welcome, Axl. I'm pretty new here, and in the same boat as you - just picked up Civ 3 after playing lots of Civ 2 (and 1), and am having a bit of culture shock.

I also have two little ones, which make it hard to get long stretches of playing time. Then again, the 3-year-old has shown some interest in it.... Get 'em started young, hey?!

Oh, and I have a thread asking for advice in the Strategy and Tips section that you might find useful if you're coming from Civ 2. Enjoy - and get some sleep! ;)

Corrupt cities still bring in minimal income or research or production -- more than minimal if they have extra food to support specialists (specialists are much improved in C3C). Plus they add to unit support. So they're far from useless.
