This isn't meant to be a rant, but just a thoughtful question: Is anyone else bothered by the sillyness of the game sometimes? The dumb comments from other leaders that are supposed to be funny, Catherine slapping you, seeing "burn, baby, burn!" when you opt to raze a city, a picture of Al Gore for the internet, and 1+1=2 for education, etc...It doesn't stop me from playing the game, but sometimes I am disappointed that the makers put in a streak of sillyness into an otherwise classy, elegant game. I know the point of the game is to have fun, but I really think it could have done without it.

And take away everything thats amusing with the game? you must be crazy... its a game, its not a bland civilization simulator.

And quite frankly catherine slapping me is one of my favourite parts of the game :p

I get a big kick out of Caesar offering me a salad, Al and his internet, and Ghandi saying "I studied on killin' you".

Ha, well for me, it's really annoying...it really makes me mad when she's winning just because of her AI bonuses and then she has the nerve to do that.

It is "Civilization" after all...otherwise, we could just be playing a squirrel empire game...first band of squirrels to take over the park wins; build new nests, train different types of squirrels, use nut/berry/stick resources, etc...silly example but you see what I mean. Historical realism is one part of the game, and the game loses a lot of its ability to really pull me in when I see the dumb things that they put in.

Maybe I'm too demanding, but I just thought I'd see if anyone felt the same way. I still love the game.

Squirrel Empire? I love it! Wish I'd had that when I was a kid.

Or when Louis, who is to the right of my Greek empire, is pleased with me and then next turn as I am marching through his territory to fend off the Romans on his left declares war on me. And he is not an aggressive guy.

I kind of feel the same way about it, but I do enjoy a good joke, too. Perhaps I will make a "formal" mod one day that harks back to the Civ 2 style.

Al Gore never claimed to invent the internet. It is a blatant fabrication by the vast right wing conspiracy.

Other than that I like the humor.

I still don't really understand how an army can take 180 years to march to war. I mean, by the time they got there, the original soldiers' would be like 5 generations removed from whoever arrived.

Do they take women along to bear their progeny so they can train them in the ways of war and teach them the lore of what they are to do when they arrive?

What I don't understand is open borders, I mean what country do you know in real life that would allow another country to build up a stack of doom in one of their city's? And I suppose in real life if the 'guests' of such country would decide to declare war on the host country, the host country would say. "fine you can declare war on us, but first let us move all your troops outside of our cultural boundries... I mean WTH??

Also since when does it take 15 years to repair a battleship??

It's a game. Games are supposed to be fun. Humor (and irony) helps make it fun.

Catherine can slap me anytime she wants to... :crazyeye:

I love the silliness! It's a GAME. The leaders are cartoons. I want to relax after a hard day's work to a pleasant, humorous game.

I don't want blood and gore... or serious, dry gameplay... and I especially don't want absolute realism! If the game must be balanced at the sake of realism, so be it... it's a game.

That's just my own opionion though. ;) I'm sure the game can be frustrating at times to other players' with different personalities.

modders, please!

depending on the extent of the damage its a possibility (ok maybe not 15 but you get the idea)

Do you know how many American troops are stationed in Europe?!

Very true, germany in particular i think, some very big usaf airbases there, used to be jupiter missiles stationed in turkey and some other nato countries on the soviet border aswell.

to the threadstarter: making the jump from civ II to IV i have noticed a lot more comic relief, but its meant to be that a slight relief. you dont want to be playing something as dull as ms flight simulator! (jk)

I also wish it were a little less "Playskool-ish". It feels like I am playing with Duplos instead of Legos with this version myself. I am not asking for an ultra-realism aspect but a little formal epic appeal to the game would be nice instead of Civ on the E! channel.

I don't believe it would have its universal appeal if the game took itself too serious.

I mean come on, who didn't love Civ2 advisors

"Would you have our troops sleep on the palace steps, Build Barracks!"

That is a Hitllery Quote!

She said that Whitewater was a "Blatent fabrication by the vast right wing conspiracy"! Ha...

Ah...I think the game is funny, compared to the hilarity in Civ III it's a borefest but at least there is some humor!

I've not been able to take the game seriuosly without the Elvis Advisor.
