Simple Idea for Final Frontier

I know this is going to indicate that I am a huge Battlestar Galactica fan, but I had an idea for the Final Frontier mod I'd like to see. I'd consider trying to code it myself but I haven't played with Python enough yet and I have a few other projects on my to do list.

Here's the idea:
1. Add a few more techs to research Jump Drive technology, maybe with varying levels of jump drive technology.
2. Since Final Frontier has ships set up by "levels", meaning you can have a lvl 1 Destroyer and a lvl 2 Destroyer, it'd be easy to edit these so the first level Destroyer doesn't have jump drives but the second level Destroyer has lvl 1 jump drives (and thus requires that tech). Then, the third level Destroyer would require 2nd level drives. I hope that's not too confusing.
3. Then, I would add two new action buttons for these ships with jump drives. A button to charge the jump drive (which is always available and immediately ends that unit's turn), and then a button to activate jump drives (which only becomes active after it has charged for a turn). The jump drive system I had in mind would be like parachuting but it wouldn't have to be within a city (or in this case a solar system).
4. I would consider removing jump gates as a building, but maybe not.
5. The jump drives with higher levels would allow for jumping greater distances.
6. I would consider adding another action button to do an "emergency" jump, which throws the unit into a random area within the distance it can actually jump, but it happens immediately (last ditch effort to save the unit if it is surrounded).
7. I would consider removing jump lanes as well, since it'd make the use of jump drives very strategically important in this game.

I'd like to hear what you guys think of this idea, because I think it'd make Final Frontier a million times more engaging (not that it isn't really fun already). All constructive criticism is welcomed.
 
I like the idea very much, though I would simplify it a bit. If you played the Afterworld mod - there's already some kind of teleport function available via promotion. The unit can teleport over some squares in certain intervals only (some turns - this could represent charging the drive), but has still all its 'normal' moves after a completed jump. I could live without the charge and emergency options you proposed, but of course if you like it :)

Overall I'd really like to see something like this for FF.
 
That's a very welcomed comment :D I just wanted to make sure I wasn't the only one interested in the idea.

If it gets enough interest but no one wants to do it, I might give it a shot...

I like this idea, tho I'm already involved in another mod and barely have time for it, but I can provide something to this mod.

I have actually created the "jump" technology for the Babylon 5 mod, it works like parachuting, doesn't require to jump from a System (city), it builds an improvement, adds culture to the tile and then the jump can be done.

It requires the ship to carry a "Jump engine".

How does it work?
 
If this can get working, I'll have to pillage it for the later Peacekeeper and Terran ships in the FF mod I am working on.
