Cities start with the normal oval shape with 6 tiles around it with workable tiles up to 36. Example. You have founded a city and can expand south more then 3 tiles away for a resources then you see a good resource 5 tiles away north then you go north tile bye tile to get it.In order to get a tile that is lets say 5 tiles away you need to have a tile that connects to it. Citites start oval but shape as the situation demands it.

Yes, need to be explained better. They are speaking a bit like Brian when he is drunk.

Best I can make out they mean if you buy out to 3 tiles in the direction of the resoursce it may encourage the city to further expand that way. But probably wrong.

In Civ V, cities grew on a tile by tile basis. A city would prioritize a third ring tile with good resources over a crappy desert/tundra tile in the second ring. As a result, you had a lot of assymetrically shaped city boundaries.

in Civ VI, the city prioritizes the ring but within that ring starts with the better yields/resources. So even though there are some awesome tiles in the third ring, you have to wait a long time to get them because the city will always get the second ring tiles first (even if those are crappy terrain). This causes city shapes to be far more oval than the snakey shapes in Civ V.

In addition, you can't influence expansion outside of the third ring (Marcus Crassus aside). And cultural border growth is so slow (compared to Civ V) that most times you won't ever get there anyway.

Translation appreciated. Yes seen this discussed before. However I must point out this is a hidden money pit. With CS payments gone in 6 this is how you can sink that money... And I do. Makes great housing.

Oh, I don't know if this is a translation, as much as a separate (but related) observation on how cities handle border growth.

I don't know if the OP is saying that there should be an easier way to get at tiles more than 3 tiles away (he mentions 5).

Or he's saying that city border shape should be more situational, rather than the consistent oval shape we see (because of the reasons I mentioned).

Another interpretation is that if you start buying tiles in a given direction, then the AI should prioritize that direction.

In terms of money sinks, I think Great People are the best examples of Faith and Gold money sinks.

I also spend a lot of gold on upgrading military units, and rush buying units to fulfill City State quests. (There is enough science and culture out there that I rarely buy units/buildings just to fulfill Eurekas/Inspirations. I only do so if there is an envoy at stake!).

Sorry guys my english is bad it´s not you,it´s me XD The point is that the number of workable tiles stays THE SAME. You can shape your cities to have L shape,or U,or P or whatever. Example. You have cities that overlap on one side and you simply acquire tiles in the other way to make up for the ones that would overlap there one by one and they are still workable despite that they are 4,5,6 or 7 tiles away. Only 36 tiles are workable so you need to choose clever which to acquire and how to form your city because it depends how many units will you need to defend it. Example. I got Iron 6 tiles away on the north i need to buy tile by tile so that one tile borders that resource to buy it,like with the general and citadel in civ 5. Then i see south ivory 5 tiles away then i did the same there.Where east and west i can only go 1 tile away from my capital since i expanded much workable tiles to acwquire those resources that where much further away. So I am expanding my 36 workable tiles the way i want for which tiles i want. The city only starts with the usual oval shape with 6 tilesi Hope you get it now xd

I get it and it is interesting if its the case

But you can only buy 3 tiles away and I thought there was a max city border setting of 5 in the xml (PLOT_INFLUENCE_MAX_ACQUIRE_DISTANCE=5) so are you sure?
Also I had a city which has extened to 5 tiles and I could place a resort on it with a worker but could not get a citizen to work a nice tiles 5 out.
I have had no issue up until now and it seemed to work the same as Civ 5... but you say 6 tiles? or even 7? have you tested? Can you post a pic?

I'm with you Victoria. In the tile work screen, you will see that you only have the option of working tiles in the first three rings. One thing I wish they would change is allowing you to indicate which tile you want the city to expand to next. Because even though you can't work those tiles beyond 3 rings, you can build mines, etc. on the resources to get the benefit from owning the resource. I've had to buy tiles even in the 2nd and 3rd ring to get a resource when the city was prioritizing a different tile as its next acquisition.
