Slow turn times - how can I improve?

Hi there,

so here is the thing I really like Civ VI, however I am only able to play it on tiny map, which is quite disappointing. On small map I have to wait for something like 15 seconds in order to AI finish his turn, which for me is too slow - I know there are people out there playing on huge maps waiting for several minutes, but . From what I understand AI turn times is depending on CPU, so this is what I have intel i5 2500k 3.3ghz with 8GB's of RAM.

My question is how can I improve those turn times, as I would really like to play on Standard map settings. Is it even worth considering to buy new CPU? If yes then which one and how big improvement I would get from it in terms of AI turns. Does other parts of the hardware are also important for AI turn times?

The main consideration for turn times is CPU, but even the best CPU in the world is going to be limited by the fact the CiV engine is bound to processing the end turn deterministically, ie. one move at a time.

So, for example, I have a i7-4790k which is roughly twice as powerful as your i5-2500. I just timed some turns on a Standard map late game and had an average of about 10s. You would expect to double this for large and double that again for huge. All very approximate of course, but hopefully it gives you an idea of what can be gained and what can't.

I haven't actually timed my turns, but I feel like the game runs fairly fast on my i5-3450 (also with 8gb ram) which according to benchmarks is very similar to i5-2500k. Only when I played on huge maps (twice so far) and I'm on turn 300+ does it take long enough for me to actually take my hand off the mouse.

What's your average CPU %-usage before you start up the game? Maybe you have a lot of background processes running. Mine's between 1-3%.

Loaded up a game just now to check and on a Small map at turn 140-145 it took between 4-5s between turns. I'm not sure how much lowering settings in the advanced options help during AI turns, but for reference I have most of mine pretty low (I don't turn shadows off, but I have the lowest quality shadows. I don't turn AA off, but I have to lowest quality AA, and so on).
