SMAC Bottom Panel Chopped Off

I just got both SMAC and SMACX to run in Windows 7 on my netbook. The latter runs completely fine as far as I can tell, but the former is unable to be displayed properly. Only about 1/3 of the bottom game panel is displayed. There's a black section right above it on the screen that I'm assuming is where the panel is supposed to be displayed. I've posted a screenshot of it. I know a netbook's resolution is non-standard, but considering SMACX runs just fine SMAC should too... right? Any suggestions? Thanks.

Try to add under [Alpha...] line to disable directdraw

DirectDraw=0

So far this worked ok for me on various computers, WinXP and vista, ratios 4:3 and widescreen.

Or it might be too something with additional software taking care or your screen scaling. E.g. nvidia panel, etc.

That's pretty much what I did to get it running in the first place. The problem is the resolution, since it's only 1024x600. SMACX takes space off the top of the screen, allowing the game panel to be shown, but SMAC seems to be cropping off the bottom, which is unfortunate.

So if I understand correctly, your monitor's resolution is 1024x600, right? Is that the maximum? If you can't change the monitor's resolution, try this: Delete the line DirectDraw=0 and add video mode=800. That should change the game's display to 800x600 and then perhaps it will fit. (Or, as previously suggested, can you run it in a window? Is that a Windows 7 feature?)

Thanks, that video mode thing worked. Everything is a little stretched out, but as long as it works...

By the way, 1024x600 is the standard resolution for netbooks. They aren't meant for games, but you gotta do something other than work once in a while. The 600 pixel limit is really annoying because it actually CAN run a lot of games (even recent ones), but most games that's come out in the past few years only support to a minimum of 1024x768 or 1024x720, so unless I want to connect my old monitor in this thing I can't play them, but that really beats the purpose of a mobile netbook. Now if I can just figure out how to get Civ3 running in this resolution... but that's for another time.

I never had netbook nor was using Windows 7, but there may be options for flat panel scaling. E.g. having nvidia card, I have so-called nvidia control panel and there are several options for scaling. You have now probably option that stretches screen, fixed aspect ratio would display 800x600 correctly.

Well, actually, maybe what you need to do is in regular display settings change your screen resolution to 800x600 for the time of playing. You might have fixed aspect ratio already on.
