The SMAC forum seems like a little reflection of the entire CivFanatic's forums. They have succession games; the first SMAC succession game is going on right now! They have their Civ3 forums; we have a thread about Alpha Centauri 2 and how it will never exist! They had their Zulu wars, we're having the Hive wars now (which the H.I.V.E. will inevitably win ;) ) The only thing we're missing is a GOTM. I tried to create one several months ago, with 3 whole people responding and one almost sending in a game! Thanks, Sukenis, thou mouthpiece of infamy*!
Anyway, despite the increased activity in this forum, I don't think that the month Civ3 comes out is a good time to make a second attempt on a SMAC GOTM. However, with some interest being expressed in the Civ2 gotm forum, I figured some sort of comparison game if nothing else would be useful. So here it is. The idea is that you download it, play it, and mail in the savegame so that I can rank all the people who play it; it allows straight comparison without worrying about difficulty level, different factions, what have you. There are no due dates; just play it when you have time, and whenever I receive a game I'll put it in listings in this thread.

My email is kundor at kundor dot org.

Difficulty: Thinker
Faction: Peacekeepers (good for a comparison game because they're so "blah")
Victory Options: Transcendence, Conquest, Diplomatic, Economic, Cooperative
Restarts on
Guided Research (blind research turned people off the GOTM)
Iron Man: No reloading! You can save only when you exit the game, so that you play a session through, then pick up where you left off the next time you play. As with all games of this type, reloading for supply pods or random events is not allowed, and SMAC has this discouragement built in. Of course I would trust most of you not to reload, but there are always those dirty DRA members... ;)

You're going to compare us?? So that you roving warmongers can show me how bad I really am?? I don't know if I like this, but, hey, I'm a sport. Say, do we have to play an entire game? I don't know if I have time for that. Besides, it seems as if our succession game is on hold, or something, or maybe people are more into the Hive wars...

Hmm.. but the game looks interesting...maybe I will check it out.

It will be straight score comparison, and peaceful tactics can get quite high scores, just like warmongers...and the peacekeepers aren't really a warmonger's faction...so you have good chances, dreadhead! As far as time, you can take a whole year to play it and send it in...this is an everlasting comparison game!

Here's the starting position with its cool pod on a river...

I'm also going in this, altough I'm a bit rusty
(last played SMAC 9 months ago)

If I remember to log back on when I get home I'll take and download it, even tho' I'll only embarass myself by making a horribly pathetic score I might give it a shot.

We'll see. Cheers.

I am still fighting with my computer at home (and the compute ris winning) so I am not sure when I will get to play the GOTM, but Iw ill for sure play it. I may just come up to work on a Saturday and beat it (yes I can beat a thinker game in one day with no problem). I will be game, just give time.

Oh, gawd, the worms, the WORMS! What did you set it to, Abundant?!? Heck, between the worms and the freaking Believers, I'm having one DOOZY of a time here. But, I'm not kvetching too hard. It's actually quite fun and challenging!

I'm at M.Y. 2165 so far...

If you want me to, I can upload the game to show you all how pathetic I am...:D
