I'm really getting into the Civ3 GOTMs, and now wishing there was a SMAC GOTM.

It's not difficult to just make a game map and then post it here and hope people play. In fact, I think I'll start an informal SMAC GOTM at some point soon. Unlike Civ3, SMAC has no need for a recalculated score, so the scoring process takes no time.

If you or someone else is going to do it, then I'll play it. However, I'd like to see non-default factions in there.

It is possible, but you can also screw your game up pretty badly. I would say not to try it, as it would be tons of work in the first place by hand.
As far as a GOTM is concerned, if I made one, I would use unique factions, but only ones downloadable from The Aldebaran Project or The Network Node.

Yeah, that comes with SMACX and is unavailable in SMAC. On an aside, I think it's possible to play the new factions on SMAC as long as you have the text files and the image files. Not sure, though, and I'm not sure about legality issues. Better to stick with fan-made factions and the original 7.
I just ran a test. It is possible to shift human SMAX factions to SMAC. However, the alien factions cause capatibility problems with SMAC.
One important thing in moving SMAX factions to SMAC is editing the alpha file to show the new factions.

Well, if I post just an ordinary start savegame for vanilla SMAC, would that be sufficient for people to join in?
