I had not played it in twenty years, I got it from GOG a year ago along with a dozen other nostalgic games, but I mostly played Planescape:Torment, but suddenly "why don't I try SMAC" and the suddenly I'm in nirvana. It's cheesy, it's SO '90s, it's perfect. Sorry, going back to plotting against Yang.

Sorry for the late reply, but I've just started a SMAC kick and stumbled on the forum. I don't know if I would personally say it's the best ever, but it's certainly one of the best, and it's in my top 10 all-time favorites - so I'm basically with you there.

I'm running Xubuntu Linux, and the Loki port stopped working a number of versions ago (Linux is like that). Just recently it occurred to me that I could set up a VM running an old version of Windows (I used 2000), and install the Planetary Pack natively and run it from there. It works like a charm! So I'm playing it again after many years, very nice.

I've also been pleased to discover there are unofficial extras out there now for the game, including custom maps (a terraformed Venus? awesome!), and there's even scient's unofficial patch that fixes a number of bugs - including the game cheekily telling me to insert the CD when I have the CD mounted! I had it mounted from an ISO for the VM, but I installed the game from that ISO, so it should have worked - but there's apparently a bug in the Registry that the scient patch fixes, so it was worth installing just for that.

Scient unofficial patch
