Has anyone used the map editor to create your own maps? Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but the map editor suks big time! Firaxis should have made it more like the map editor in Civ2, a seperate program within the game, like the present faction editor in SMAC/x.

So, if anyone has had any luck with the map editor, I sure would appreciate some tips. For instance, can you create a map from scratch, or must you generate a random map, then, modify it?

It's driving me crazy that I can't create my own maps for SMAC like I can for Civ2.

You are SO spot-on. The editor seems unnecessarily complex. I mainly generate a random map and then go to work 'painting' the extra features that I want by using the 'raise terrain' feature.

If anyone from Firaxis or Apsyr reads this -- I would pay $50 (Yes, even US dollars) for a proper map and faction/scenario editor and a good manual (and the ability to interchange between Mac and PC). This would add another 2 years to the life of this great game.

You said it, Sid! I'd fork out the $50 in a heartbeat for a proper map/faction editor with a detailed manual. Imagine the possibilities...

i agree with what u say, but the civ2 editor wasnt that great either, but its still better than the smac editor.

Ok I'll help ya! I hate the thing i havd the game for like forever and until just recently never learned how to work the stupid thing! One major prob is the didnt give a manuel. Another thing is in the page they do give you about it it say firaxis isnt responsible if it tears up your computer. Also somtimes when i go back to play regular my game is messed up. For instance i once turn SPs off in a scen. Next game i played i couldnt build any of them. The thing is SOO dumb!

Anyways I'll help ya im not an expert but i know a little about it.
Your q, yes you can get a map with just water and you place EVERYTHING but its just usally easier to use one of theirs, maybe if some one around here has a map theyd give ya...

A tip... you can create a planet without xeno fungus! Yes its true!
I'd tell ya how but i cant rember if anyones interested i'll go and see.:)

Hey, Spy, I'd be interested to know--really. I have tried to start a map from scratch, and all I could do was place landmarks. I also want to know if you can determine the starting point for factions, like you can determine the starting point for civs in the civ2 map editor.

Theres alot of things you can do its just difficult to understand. For your question you can put a praticular colony pod somewhere and they will start in the general area. But i havent figured out how to place a city yet so...

For the other thing you go to scenario editor go down to like the bottom and theres something that says like map or planet editor (i think cant rember well i promose i'll invetagate asap) And theres stuff there where you can create pramiters for a map and then you like click generate. Agin im not real sure.

Anything else??:)

EDIT OK i got how you get rid of fungus, you go to edit map and then its says generate remove fungus. Whew took me FOREVER!
