Can the popular Sn00py's Terrain Graphics Modpack be used on a Mac?

Moderator Action: I assume this should be in the Civ3 forum, so I'm moving it.

Yes - but for C3C, see the forum post that I started on the subject. The version that shipped on the DVD is PtW only, and you need to download your own copy for the C3C executable.

It works in vanilla too, just extract the files and manually replace them. This technique also works in C3C, and is exactly what I have done, as I want all my games to look like snoopy's.

Do as MAS suggests, then. Back up your entire Art folder in csse you want to revert, and replace the relevant files with the ones in the SnOOpy version that you want to use.

That is the vanilla version. You have to use the C3C version with Conquests, otherwise it's been established that the volcanoes erupt alarmingly frequently.

I have a question. I just installed Sn00py's terain modpack on Civ 3 vanilla. Playing on a 400MHz G3, 512mb RAM, Rage 128, Mac OS X 10.2.8.

After the install the game seems slower to me. Obviously this is a subjective statement as there is no frames-per-second counter, but the game doesn't seem nearly as smooth anymore. Anybody else notice this? Maybe more texture swapping to the HD or something?

I can't see how it could change your performance. The terrain files are pure bit-mapped .pcx files, and the snoopy ones should be no more complex for the software to render than the standard ones were.

Well, I'm going to have to find time for some testing. I had just enough time the other day to realize that I have 2 copies of Civ 3 installed on my machine. I have no idea when or why I did that.

I rebooted into OS 9 and loaded the saved game with Civ 3 on my 6GB OS 9 drive (sans modpack) and the game ran really quick. Rebooted into OS X, loaded the save with Civ 3 (Sn00py-fied) on the 80GB OSX drive, and it was dog slow. Too many factors at play to single out the modpack as the slowdown. I'll have to eliminate some of them when I have some time. :(

Okay, I've determined that it's not Sn00py's modpack that is causing my slowdown. (Well at least not the bulk of it.) Booting into OS 9 and playing with the modded install was nice and snappy. My slowdown was a direct result of going from Civ3 under OS9 ---> OS X.

I thought I had tested Civ 3 on OS X after my recent RAM upgrade, finding it acceptable. Really thinking about it though, I'm not sure I had even run Civ since the ugrade. Looks like "the snappy" is only going to be found under Mac OS 9 on this trailing edge machine. :(

I ran Sn00py's terrain under Civ3C and did notice that the volcanoes were all in pretty much continuous eruption. Where do I get the C3C version, or is included in the C3C DVD and I just have not recognized which on it is? The terrain looks far better than the terrain the game uses, and I cannot figure out why Firaxis did not use graphics of the same quality for the C3C game, since they are clearly available.

It's not on your disk. Look around the Civ3 C&C forum/Graphic Modpacks.

It's a matter of taste. Me? I prefer the original. Snoopy's is way too technicolor for me.

i manually replaced all the files in the art folder that had to do with the snoopy's terrain...and it now crashes the game...strange...i wonder if it has anything to do with leopard.....hrm hrm hrm
anybody else encounter that?

Manually replacing files in the Art folder is not for the faint hearted. One mistake and you're likely to get exactly what you have seen - a crash. You shouldn't have to replace any of the original files. You should be able to install Snoopy's terrain as a Scenario and then select it in the Civ-Content menu. I'm assuming you are talking about the Civ3 Complete version, by the way.

yeah, stupid me, i haven't played civ 3 in a year or two... and i wanted to make sure that i had snoopy's terrain (i love it)... i relized it is already installed in my game for some reason, along with a ton of other thingers...
and yes i am using complete
silly mistake
