So does anyone think Civ 4 is as addicting as other games?

IMO is not Civ4. I been an avid player of civ3-4(got civ 3 two days after it came out and played since then). Civ 3 gets redundant when you spend your summer vacation to find tactis to kill your least favorite civ. About a year before Civ4 came out, i got tired of Civ3 and decided to switch to other game generes. I tried Warcraft 3, and its expansion, RTW, Guildwars, alot of other real-time strategy games. Then i bought Civ4 the day it came out. I was exicted, but then i had to spend hours fixing the ATI graphics card issue. I was sort of dissapointed by the gameplay, but i kept playing. Then, two weeks ago, i found World of Warcraft....That is the most addicting game ever created. I been staying up to 4-5am(during Christmas break) playing on my friend's account (since he won't let me play during the day). They're 4 million people playing that game. I am currently a newbie with lots of friend. I have my own guild(clan). I spend hours trying to do quests and lvl up. That's the kind of "i wanna play more" that civ4 should get. In civ 4, you really don't compete against the AI and imo the Multiplayer isn't that good(i haven't played much). There is no ladder rankings (like WC3) and there is almost no point to repeadtly play this game (other than pwn the AIs, which imo isn't that much fun. While in World of Warcraft(WoW), you play for keeps, items, money, and more importantly the urge to pwn your friends in duels and calling them half-a@@ noobs.
P.S I play on Thunderhorn, if anyone here plays WoW and likes to join a clan, just replay to this thread or whisper me in game (i won't be on during the day) at Welovebears.

I think it is, probably even more. I've found myself playing for 2-3 hours before noticing what time it is.

Personally I have trouble figuring out what's so addictive about any MMORPG. This game are more like a chore then anything. They are design just to keep you busy so you keep paying the monthly fee. I really tried hard to get into FF11 (play it over 3 months solid) but I found I had more fun washing dishes than playing MMORPG. True, you can talk to others people while doing your game chores but this gets old fast.

I will agree that MMORPGs are addicted but not in a really fun way. When you play them you feel like you have to play with all your free time and keep playing, but you don't feel like you're missing much when you do take a break for whatever reason. At least that's how I found WoW. So I would sort of force myself to get back in to the game and would be addicted again, but I thought that whole cycle was dumb, so I stopped playing.

Civ4....did someone say Civ4??-where can I play more CIV4?? :twitch:  :crazyeye:
Nope sorry, am not addicted to this game one little bit (as he heads off to his local CivAnon meeting....) ;) :mischief:.

Yours,
Aussie_Lurker.

Civ 4 is addicting for me ;) If I ever get bored of something, I can try a variant, a mod or a new scenario. When the SDK comes out, there will always be something new and always a new challenge.
Now I must go and try and beat up people with Samurais. ^^

I do both :)

Both my roomate and I have CivIV and WoW, we were two of the five or six friends that founded the Alliance of Exile guild on Garona (PvE). It's grown to about 50 people now, who are online regularly in the evenings to pop off bosses. (currently up to the Broodlord in Blackwing Lair). Doing things with a group of friends makes a huge difference when playing a game with real people, regardless of the genre (compare the prospect of random MP games in Civ to games with friends, for example). Going around doing things all by your self, all the time, in a game like World of Warcraft would be rather boring...the fun is to have a cool time and share experiences with people you like :)

You'd be surprised at how many people you can meet in a game that live close in real life. The Garona server was originally one of the Central Standard servers before they removed the time-zone classification, and Texas is the most populous state in that time zone. As a result, we've found we have 7 people in our guild that go to UT, so we do a lot of things around campus too.

The games I've been addicted to:

Lemmings (OH NOES!!!)
SimCity 2000
Civ II
Tiberian Sun
Alpha Centauri
Red Alert II
Warcraft III
SimCity 4
World of Warcraft
Civ IV

i find Civ4 to be so addictive i get twitchy :crazyeye:

i thank god for every day i live in a world where Civ4 exists ;)

i used to play WoW, but quit becuase all the most of the players were powertrippin wuckfits and PvP is useless

i can't wait to play Civ4 multiplayer

I dunno, i used to play freelancer online and it was great fun, clan wars (with space combat in case anyone doesnt know freelancer). A little light RP etc it was fun.

Its the interaction and competing with real people

Civ 4 is very addictive, I like it alot even with its shortcomings.

As for WoW, i've never played and don't want to for fear of addiction. MMORPG's are evil, I played EQ on/off for 4 years then EQ2 for a good few months when it came out. I tried other variations, such AC and AC2, DAOC, SWG and AO but none had the depth and playability of EQ. I agree absolutely with Lucas87 & Smidlee, while they are fun to play, they are also a chore to play and you feel you have to keep playing just to keep up with your friends, there were many times where the games could be so boring, mundane, utterly frustrating and I felt I was just doing the same thing over and over again such as running from one place to another, although they have tried to cut many of the boring parts out I think I have had my fill of MMORPG's to last me a lifetime. Unless the genre undergoes a massive overhaul and/or something really new and innovative comes out then i'll stay well clear.

I remember when EQ first came out, the entire community was alltoo happy to help each other, now no matter whicch MMORPG you play, there are too many arrogant pr*cks around who ruin the game for everyone else.

Man I didn't mean for this to turn into a rant. I'll just close it by refferring back to the first line - yes Civ4 is addictive, but in a good way because I enjoy every moment I play. Which is more than I can say for my time spent playing MMORPG's.

CIV4 is a good game. "Good" as in "compared to the bulk of games out there". Compared to other CIVs and CIV-alikes I see it as an improvement in SOME ways, but a harsh disappointment in some OTHER ways.

Personally, I have to answer the question if I'm addicted to it with "no", seeing that I haven't played it for 2 weeks now and had a couple of games of an 8-years-old 3D RTS instead. That's a first for a CIV game (for me, a veteran from CIV1 on) - even CtP1 was more alluring to me :(

I honestly don't think I have been in bed before 2.30 am since this game came out.

Maybe around midnight I start to make my last cup of tea for the night intending a final 30 minutes of play...... but by the time that wonder is finished....... then that great person is about to be born......... then the war has started.... then the war has ended.... then another wonder is around the corner.........

so it goes until im falling asleep in my chair...

so in a nutshel.. yes, as addictive as I have found all other civs to be and very few other games.

I have been playing all Civ and clones (Master of Orion 1 - 3, GalCiv etc.) and found all of this games quite addicting. As a player, that dislikes the former stack of doom or infinite city sprawl strategies, Civ IV is fine for me. My computer hasn´t got any troubles in running the game, therefore i also can´t complain about technical issues (at the moment).

Talking about MMPORGs. I played WoW for 6 month. But i never encountered such a bunch of selfish people in one place.

For me it all depends on how my current game is going. Sometimes I dont play CIV4 for a day or two but when I start a game and it develops into a good game then thats all I think about.

definitely the most addicting game i've played in a long time.
if i lose a long game, do i get fed up and go to bed? nope. start up another game and try again. if i win a long game, do i feel satisfied and ready to call it a night? heck no. i dive right back in and try to win a different way than i have before, with a leader i've never played well with.
this game is completely ridiculous. i hope in a month or so i get bored so i can start living like a normal person again.

The only game that I ever found more addictive than Civ 4 was ultima online many years back. That and of course Civ 3 is up there.

Exactly. But Civ4 is addictive in the sense that you enjoy being addicted. ;)

For me Civ4 is more addictive than any of the previous Civs. I've always enjoyed the Civ games, but 4 is the only one that I find myself thinking about all day; and getting up early in the morning to play again after a late night.

By the way, 'addicting and 'addictive' are not the same thing. Almost all the time 'addictive' is the correct word. Addictive is the adjective.

I think it's only a matter of taste, you like it or you don't. But once you're really into civ 4, there's no getting out. I play lots of games but none of them ever really kept me up as long as the civ series could (gta sa came close). On the other hand, i don't see why so many people are so heavily addicted to WoW; the game concept is great and is more than enough to keep you entertained, but it's kinda scary that more than 3 people have died as a consequence of WoW addiction (including one baby). While the Civ victim counter is standing still at 0.
