So essentially, game does not have weapon tech.

You just get your affinity level, and then troops will figure out plasma guns and such.

Personally, I'm disappointed from flavor standpoint. No technology blurb for high tech stuff that units use.

.

And transition to level 3 affinity units is so jarring.

From realistically looking 1-2 level affinity units, you get to comic book Saturday cartoon looking Battlesuit "centurions" with plasma rifles and bad-ass attitude. Urgh...

Don't forget that we travel to a new world some 200+ years in the future.

And we have to research biology, chemistry, physics, balistics, genetics, computers etc all over again.

Yeah, learning how to build laboratories and trade depots after you travelled to another star is really great :).

You should just try to ignore that. The game works from the "gameplay" perspective and not "flavor" perspective. There are massive flavor/common sense loopholes and flaws in favor of gameplay.

They do have to rebuild the necessary infrastructure to build all these things. In the 'pedia it even describes many of the Tier 1 units as being pre-seeding designs or adapted from civilian equipment..

And this is why this game is not spiritual successor to Alpha Centauri. That game was much more about flavor and atmosphere then mechanics.

The only thing I like about this new affinity upgrade mechanic is that all your units get upgraded at once. It makes faster gamespeeds more viable because you dont end up with obsolete units across the globe.

That being said, it's another drop of common sense (you had to upgrade units in your borders in Civ V) in favor of game dynamics.
And again I like it only because now I can play on Quick speed more consistently (and I have to because I have a lot of job-related work :)). If I had time for Epic games, it would probably piss me off how a weak AI unit in my territory which is cut off from supplies suddenly becomes a strong unit.

The idea is that all those technologies have to be adapted to the new planet before they can be used.

What else would you suggest? They let you build everything from the start? They make you research nanotechnology to build a car?

You're researching the biology, chemistry and genetics of an alien world, the physics implications of things like Firaxite and Floatstone, and how to adapt Earth technology to your new home.

Seems perfectly reasonable to me.

The tech quotes sort of reflect this, but oh do I ache for some better ones.

Yeah, clearly we've learned all there is to know about physics.

Well just remember that they brought the seeding ships to sustain life and start colonies, a lot of things we find trivial wouldn't have had space in the seeding so the people who came along would have to rediscover that stuff. Also researching physics makes perfect sense, the new planet probably has a different gravitational pull
