I bought CIV IV when it first came out, having played the downloaded demo on my laptop just fine.
But it was Over THREE MONTHS before I could get the game to run. I was one of the many with the ridiculous PLEASE INSERT CORRECT CD ROM problem. I recall it was finally solved, not by the scant and confusing messages I got from TAKE 2, but rather by a person on CIV FANATICS who privately emailed me how to get around the problem. I don't even recall what he suggested (Stupidly, I did not right it down...)
When WARLORDS came out, fortunately, that loaded and played just fine.
According to WINDOWS I am all caught up on all my updates. My laptop is 2 years old and rather high-end, XP Home, with nVidea GO 6800 that has always worked just fine.
Today, I made a really dumb move: While playing WARLORDS (I don't seem to play CIV IV) I downloaded the patch. It's installation forced the Download of the CIV IV Patch also.
I shoulda come HERE first to see how if any was having problems.
Upon completion, I could not start EITHER game. I went and downloaded all these DLL files people are recommending and none helped.
When trying to open Warlords, I got: Boost_Python-VC71-MT-1_32.DLL was not found; reinstalling this application may fix the problem.
HA!
I tried to Re-Install but was told I would have to Uninstall the old (new) version first.
I went to Control Panel and Add/Remove, but (ready?) it would NOT let me remove the program!!!!! I restarted my computer with the SAME result. SO now not only did I not have the game, I could not even uninstall it to see if a Reinstall might help.
So I put in my PLAY disk for the original CIV IV (which actually is NOT Play disk, since the two original disks were both incorrectly identified).
Guess what I got? My Old Friend: PLEASE INSERT THE CORRECT CD ROM....

After nearly 2 hours lost trying for solutions, I tried one that suddenly popped into my admittedly 'limited-knowledge of computer' brain: SYSTEM RESTORE.
I brought it up, and there listed right before me in red print, was SAVES from just before my installation of the CIV IV patch, the WARLORDS patch and all the other DLL files I downloaded.
I went to the earliest choice, followed the steps, and VOILA!

Now I am back to the woeful WARLORDS 1.0
But you know what? AT LEAST I CAN PLAY THE FREAKIN' GAME!!!

TAKE 2 should be Ashamed!!!!!!!!

This is perhaps my all-time favorite piece of software, but I've waste hours and hours with aggravation, and I cannot play the game with all the proper fixes.
Lovely.
Any other suggestions greatly appreciated.
Hope this might help someone else who had not thought of the S/R 'solution'. RIK

So now, after further reading and a few more suggestions, today I successfully installed the DirectX DLL update (the June edition, said to be most current). I then tried both Civ IV and WARLORDS and both still worked fine. I saw I already 1.61 Civ so no problem there. However, I had 2.0 W/L, so I did what others have suggested, updated to 2.08 It said I have Definately done the update. SO, I doubleclicked on my Desktop W/L icon, game started fine. I took a look at the ADVANCED About This Build, and it STILL Showed 2.0 I went into a game in progress and saw that update changes had NOT been done... Colisseum still costs 120, Beurocracy still at Medium Upkeep. I thought maybe I did not do it correctly (from patch at Take 2 Website). So I repeated, and when I went to install, it said that the 2.08 was ALREADY installed! Huh? It asked if I wanted to install again, which I did, but same 2.0 result.
However, one thing DID change after the 2.08... if I try to run the game from the DISK in the drive, I get the Boost_Python.... error!
How could the game think it upgraded to 2.08 but in reality it didn't?

I don't know what "updates" you mean? I think you mean Microsoft Updates. Not only had I done that but was surprised that in a different thread I was told about updating DirectX DLL library updates of some sort that are NOT found when I just do "updates". So I downloaded and installed that as well, and STILL have this problem. I dunno, maybe it is just this laptop. But EVERY other game has always run great and once I am IN Civ IV, all seems fine. It's that patching up has been the problem. Oh Well, appreciate the suggestions.....
