Ok as you can see from the screenshot I am besieged by barbs and I have no idea where they are coming from. I know FFH has more barbs that unmodded BtS but this is just extreme.
Spoiler :

Now what makes this weirder. I am playing on warlord and raging barbs is turned off so I don't why there is so many barbs. It may be to do with the map type. I picked great plains just to see what its like and the only resource that I have on it are cows but I doubt that has any thing to do with the barbs.

So far two civs have fallen to the barbs and I don't plan to be the third but that grim reaper guy is going to be tough he has combat 4 promotion, fear and and another promotion that looks like a hand ( Might be the one that spreads the withered promotion). All the other random barbs like skeletons, lizard men etc are just free exp and they don't even bother pillaging my lands.

So any tips that could help me out of this situation I can post the save if anyone is interested.

How many barbarians you see in the early game is influenced by how much empty space there is on the map and by how many lairs there are on the map. The number of lairs is random, so there's not much you can do about that. (You can eliminate a lair by exploring it, but that can be dangerous in the early game.) The amount of empty space depends on how many civs are in the game and how quickly they expand. If you are being overwhelmed by barbarians then you could increase the number of civs in the game (in your next game), to decrease the empty space available for them to spawn.

That makes sense from what I have seen there is a lot of space between me and civs I've met. Hopefully I can fill that space but for now my centaurs are mopping up any barbs that reach my boarders giving me exp that will prepare my units for when the Hippus inevitably invade. I managed to take down that wraith but I'm curious as to where it could have come from I haven't seen any dungeons so the AI cant have spawned him from there. I'm guessing that the great plains map script isn't suited for FFH2 as the only resource is cows.

I think that I'm going to stick with this game and see how it plays out.

The only way for the barbarians to get spectres and wraiths (other than bad lair exploration results) is for a skeleton to win a battle. If a skeleton wins a battle, it upgrades to a spectre; if a spectre wins a battle (or maybe multiple battles?), it upgrades to a wraith. To avoid that situation in the future make sure you immediately kill any skeleton that wins a battle.

(Of course, if you didn't see the wraith upgrade from a skeleton then it probably did so off another civilization's units.)

(You can eliminate a lair by exploring it, but that can be dangerous in the early game.)

You can also neutralize the danger by keeping a unit fortified on the lairs tile. Unless you are at peace with the barbarians or the unit is invisible (beware of Nox Noctis when trying this) a lair will not generate any random spawns while a unit is guarding it. There is still some risk that another civ might explore the lair you're guarding though.

The two civs that died might have been near you, in which case all the barbarians meant for them funnel down to you and other nearby neighbours.

This has happened to me a few times. Worse even is when you have Sheelba and Endain as neighbours, because guess where the barbarians go?

The highly promoted wraith is a good indication that this is probably what happened. Early barb wraiths tend to annihilate AI civs quite frequently.

I see a frostling wolf rider on there as well, sounds like the Ilians built that early ritual of theirs, I forget it's name. That'll spawn a number of frostling, frostling archers, and frostling wolf riders.

Congratulation! You have so many barbarians around your bolder.

Your units can get much XP and grow very strong!

Note: 1 level of Combat increases 20% Strength instead of 10%, while Shock increases 40% against melee.

Keep level up your veterans, you can easily have a army with +100% more strength.

For the super barbarians - there must be someone dug the tombs ^^
